Drama and Theatre Studies and Spanish. (I may or may not have snuck into some Post-Modern European Cinema lectures too)

Best memory of UCC

My best memory of UCC is sitting in the amphitheatre at the start of my second year, late September sun beaming down, waiting for my friend David to finish his lecture so we could go to The Main and get Sausages, Eggs and Chips and feeling just the right mix of grownup and adolescent. It's not very often you get to appreciate a moment when you're in it, it's usually looking back, but in that moment I remember taking a second to smile. It was like my stereotypical idea of college that was founded on American teen movies, was happening for real.
That or any of my time spent in the Granary theatre.

Greatest challenge during your time at UCC

I found the clique-ness of some of the Clubs and Socs hard. Some of them seemed completely impervious to new members, I didn't know how to 'get in' with them. I wasn't a big party-goer and I found that tough.

How has your time at UCC helped you to get to where you are now?

My time in Drama and Theatre Studies under Ger FitzGibbon definitely paved the way to where I am now. I was exposed to great Irish writing and writers and was given a safe platform to experiment with my performance and writing style. It was a safety net without ever being a comfort zone. I wouldn't be the same person I am now without that course. I'll never forget its title CK112.

What is your advice to current UCC students?

I'm always wary of giving advice. I hated people giving advice to me when I was in college. If I could give advice to my university-self I wouldn't waste my breath because it would have fallen on deaf ears. So in that vein I'd probably smile and say nothing. But I'd be thinking in my head "you don't have to do anything you don't want to do". Be it parties, lectures, relationships, nights-out. Decide what you WANT, do it, and deal with the consequences.

Favourite UCC legend or superstition

If you traverse the quad you'll fail your exams. I love proving those things wrong!!

Were you involved in any Clubs or Societies?

No. As I said above. I couldn't figure them out. So I did my own thing. I think I joined them all though, for the free pot noodle. Desperate times. Offer me a free pot noodle and I'll sign up for anything!
