Judge Olann Kelleher - 2018 Awardee
Olann Kelleher is the recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award for Voluntary Service to the University for his contribution to the UCC Rugby Club as a coach and manager.
Olann Kelleher was appointed as a District Court Judge in 2010 and currently works in Cork city. He is a founding Partner of Comyn Kelleher Tobin Solicitors. Alongside his success in the legal world, Olann has had an illustrious sporting career. His sporting highlights began in first year at UCC when he played on the team that won the Fresher’s Soccer Inter-varsity. He also played cricket for Munster. However, it was on the rugby pitch that Olann’s talents really shone.
He was part of the legendary Munster Rugby squad that beat the All Blacks in 1978 and was a member of the UCC Senior Team that won the Munster Senior League and All Ireland Trophy in 1974. He was also the selector for Munster when they beat Australia in Musgrave Park in 1992.
Other rugby accolades include terms as Captain and President of Dolphin RFC and as President of UCC RFC. He has coached and managed teams with UCC as well as serving on the Rugby Club Management committee. He has served with distinction as President of the Club from 2015-16 and 2016-17. During his time as Club President he published ‘The Mardyke Memories’, a collection of personal memories of famous personalities who graced the famous Mardyke including Roy Keane, Moss Keane and Dr. Con Murphy. He also organised a dinner to honour all of the 29 living UCC players who went on to play International Rugby for Ireland, raising funds for the Rugby Club.
Born in 1953, Olann Kelleher was reared on Western Road and spent his childhood climbing trees by the river at UCC. He was educated at Presentation Brothers College and Newbridge College and graduated from UCC with a BCL in 1974. He qualified as a solicitor in 1977 and went on to become a founding Partner of Comyn Kelleher Tobin, which now employs 25 solicitors. Olann Kelleher is married to Susan, and they have four children and four grandchildren.
