  • Dr Aidan MacCarthy MB '39 (Decd.)
    Joined the RAF during World War 2. Was captured in Java and survived four years as a Japanese prisoner-of-war.  
    Was in the centre of Nagasaki when the atomic bomb dropped in 1945. Survived and treated the wounded and dying. 
    He was awarded the George Medal and an OBE for his bravery, resourcefulness and humanity while in captivity.
