Course Outline

Presence and charisma are qualities which are difficult to precisely describe or define, but we immediately know them when we see them. What is it that makes some people seem so… magnetic? What is it that creates that mysterious quality which the French describe as je ne sais quoi… (I don’t know what…)? Join method actor and theatre director Scotty McQueen as he teaches point-by-point how anyone can learn to move, speak, and connect with presence and charisma.

From conversations and cooperation, to presentations and networking, The Secrets of Presence and Charisma will explore both personal and professional applications of these fascinating qualities. Drawing from behavioural sciences and performance studies, this course will explore the ABC’s of magnetic personalities: Appearance, Behaviour, and Connection. In addition to verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, this course will also explore widely misunderstood (or neglected) areas of psychophysical communication, such as empathy and suggestibility. We will explore the paradoxical relationship between authenticity and “faking it,” and examine, not only what it means to have presence, but to be present.

Course Practicalities

Class notes, including a follow-up reading list, and assorted video and article links will be provided after each session for those wishing to delve more deeply into the topics.

Why Choose This Course

At one time or another, most of us have admired someone’s presence and charisma, while wishing we had more of it, whatever it is… As tools for connecting, influencing, persuading, and mentoring, the importance of these mysterious qualities – often described as an energy or magnetism – cannot be overstated. Fortunately, research has established that enhanced presence and charisma are within anyone’s grasp.

This one-of-a-kind course explores the widely misunderstood qualities of presence and charisma through the lenses of performance studies, theatre arts, and behavioural science. Scotty McQueen draws on his diverse background as an academic, actor, director, and artist, to transform a mysterious and elusive quality into a series of identifiable behaviours which can be learned, practiced, improved, and mastered
