The Criminal Mind

Course Overview:
This course will be of interest to anyone from novices to professionals who has an interest in violent and criminal behaviour. Over 10 weeks the course will consider the criminal mind from a psychological perspective by addressing the various theories presented by criminology and forensic psychology. Participants will gain an understanding and insight into the relationship between psychology and crime by considering the deviant behaviours of child molesters, paedophiles, rapists and murderers.
Course Schedule:
- Week 1: Introduction to Violent, Criminal and Deviant Behaviour
- Week 2: Understanding Mental Disorders and Criminal Behaviour
- Week 3: Understanding Personality and Disorders of Personality
- Week 4: Psychopathy and Psychopaths
- Week 5: The Crime of Rape, Rapists and the Irish Legal System
- Week 6: Paedophiles and Child Molesters

Course Lecturer :
Dr. Ciara Staunton established the short course on the Criminal Mind in 2006 to suit the true crime fanatics. As a lecturer, her area of expertise lies within the field of forensic and criminal psychology. She obtained her Degree in Applied Psychology from UCC in 1999, an MSc. in Applied Forensic & Legal Psychology from Leicester University in 2001 and a PhD in Forensic Psychology from UCC in 2009. Her research focus has always been around the topic of sexual violence. In 2023, Ciara, along with her colleague Dr Catherine O'Sullivan in the School of Law, completed the first research study on the topic of Stalking Behaviours in Ireland. Ciara is a regular contributor to the media on contemporary cases and also delivers the ever-popular Diploma in the Psychology of Criminal Behaviour.
Dr. Eliana Monteiro holds a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from University College Cork (Ireland), an M.S. in Sexology from Universidade Gama Filho (Brazil), and an MBA in Business Management and Social Projects from the Federal University of Itajubá (Brazil). With over 15 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Monteiro has lectured in more than ten academic programs, worked extensively as a counselling psychologist, and conducted in-depth research in the field of sexuality.
