Upskill or Reskill with ACE’s Part-time Industry/Enterprise/Nursing Focused Modules
ACE at UCC are offering free or heavily subsidised places to those seeking to upskill or reskill under the Government's new Modular Skills Provision initiative. Fees are subsidised by 90-100%.
These industry and nursing focused part-time modules offer opportunities to enhance your skills in a broad range of industry sectors. These short courses are ideal for jobseekers, returners, employed and formerly self-employed.
Modules will be delivered online from mid-September to mid-December (exact timetables to be confirmed upon course commencement). Live online classes will be delivered one evening per week. Occasional Saturday morning classes may also be timetabled.
Closing date for applications is 30th August. Places are limited so early application is advisable. Applicants may choose one module only.
Read the below in detail to see which category you may fall under. Some applicants will be eligbible for full fee subsidy, while others will be required to pay only 10% of the programme fee upon application.
- Those Unemployed
People in receipt of PUP or a jobseekers payment can participate on approved July Stimulus part time postgraduate courses only. These applicants will not pay any course fees once evidence of the PUP or jobseekers payment is provided with the application. Such participants must remain available for employment while attending the course.

- Returners
Returners are those who are not in receipt of a payment from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection but who have been out of the work environment for a number of years due to childcare or other caring obligations. They have a previous history of employment but may require upskilling, reskilling or cross-skilling to transition back to the workforce. To be eligible the applicant must have been:
- A Homemaker or on other caring duties for a minimum period of 9 of the previous 12 months prior to their application
- Ordinarily resident in an EU/EEA/UK/Swiss state for at least three of the five years preceding their entry to the programme
- In addition, the applicant will need to provide supporting documentation to confirm their status as a Homemaker.
- Applicants must swear a declaration before a Commissioner for attesting to their status (please see form here).
Returners will not pay any course fees. Please contact ace@ucc.ie to receive a discount code for the 100% fee subsidy.
- Those Employed
Applicants who are employed will need to meet the residency requirements, i.e. that the applicant has been ordinarily resident in an EU/EEA/UK/Swiss state for at least three of the five years preceding their entry to the programme. This category of applicant will also be required to provide a copy of their most recent ‘Employment Detail Summary’ or other relevant revenue documentation. These applicants will be required to pay 10% of the course fee upon application.
- Formerly Self-employed
To be eligible those who are formerly self-employed must provide a letter/statement from Revenue confirming that the applicant is no longer trading or a similar letter from the applicants (former) accountant should be sufficient. Alternatively, a participant can swear a declaration stating that they are no longer self-employed. These applicants will be required to pay 10% of the course fee upon application.
To take a course you will need to:
1. be living full-time in the Republic of Ireland
2. have your own, valid PPS Number
3. meet the nationality/visa requirement
- You are an EU/EEA/UK/Swiss national or:
- You have permission to remain in Ireland as a family member of an EU citizen or;
- You have Stamp 4 or Stamp 4 EU FAM on your GNIB residence card or;
- You have official refugee status in Ireland / are here on the basis of refugee family reunification or;
- You have been granted Humanitarian Leave to Remain in the State (prior to the Immigration Act 1999) or;
- You have permission to remain following the Minister’s decision not to make a deportation order.
4. have lived in either the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland for at least 3 out of the last 5 years
- If you are a Stamp 4 or Stamp 4 EU FAM holder, residency is calculated from the date you received your stamp. Any time before this cannot be counted.
- If you have refugee status in Ireland, residency is counted from the date you applied for International Protection.

NOTE:
Once you have selected your course your application saves automatically. No fees are applicable for unemployed and returners (homemakers, carers, etc.) as these fees are subsidised by the Government scheme.

Those currently in employment, previously self-employed, or who do not meet eligibility for a DEASP payment will incur a 10% fee. This fee will be collected online at time of application. Please note that applications cannot be processed until the appropriate fee is paid, due to the short timeframe involved. Each course costs a different amount, please check the relevant course pages for the exact amounts.

CM2011 Introduction to Validation Science & CM2012 Validation Science (10 credits) (Certificate in Validation Science)
Module Overview: The first module, Introduction to Validation, introduces key concepts related to working within a GMP environment and the second module (Validation Science) gives the learner a critical understanding of all aspects involved in process validation. This is an industrially focused course where students gain valuable knowledge and key skills in subject areas pertinent to working in highly regulated manufacturing environments such as GMP, Quality and Validation. The importance of validation of equipment, plant, utilities, processes and procedures in industry will be shown to be an essential approach to consistently producing products of the intended quality. Both modules are delivered through a blended approach of online delivery of material content, industrial supported seminars, industrial led webinars and industrial championed workshops.

Entry Requirements: Candidates must hold a minimum level 6 qualification or equivalent in an engineering or science disciple. Candidates with significant relevant experiential learning may be eligible through our recognition of prior learning (RPL) processes.
English Language Requirement: All applicants whose first language is not English must have attained IELTS Level 6 or the equivalent TOEFL score.

MG5810 Leadership and Management (10 credits)
Module Overview: This module explores leadership and management through models and current thinking with the objective of enhancing leadership and management potential. The module provides participants with enhanced knowledge and skills in leadership and management in order to improve their own effectiveness as a leader by developing leadership capability and competency in motivation, communication, corporate political and cultural understanding, and team developmental strategies.

MG5840 Managing Change and Transformation (10 credits)
Module Overview: This module analyses the key challenges in the context of change and transformational management in organisations – something that is even more critical for organisations in the context of the current Covid-19 crisis. The module focuses on change and its impact on organisational development, leadership, and strategy. It aims to deliver an understanding of change processes specifically related to enhancing the organisation's competitive advantage, while exploring the consequence and impact of change and transformation within the organisation at both the organisational and individual levels. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to deliver effective planned change interventions with cognisance of individual responses to change. They will also be able to apply best practice in developing a communication approach to meet the needs of a change programme.

IP5001 Holistic Approach to Palliative Care.
Module Overview: This module aims to develop the learner’s palliative care knowledge, attitudes and skills, thus enabling the learner to apply the principles of palliative care in their clinical practice, to improve the quality of life of patients receiving palliative care and their families. The module content explores a holistic approach to palliative care; physical, psychological, sociological and spiritual aspects with pain and symptom management in palliative care.
Additional Teaching Mode Information: Blended Learning: 16 hrs Lectures (Face to Face / Online – dependant on National Health Restrictions) from Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, Cork.
Module lecture Dates: 29th September 2021 & 20th October 2021 + 16 hrs of e-Learning.
Entry Requirements:
· A primary degree or an equivalent experience in a relevant health care discipline* to be approved by the Programme Team.
· Registration or eligibility for registration with the appropriate professional healthcare registration body.
· Ideally candidates should have a minimum of one-year post qualification experience in healthcare provision.
*A relevant health care discipline includes but is not limited to medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, audiology, physiotherapy, psychology, and social studies.
Module Fee: The fee for this module is €497.50 for EU applicants (90-100% fee subsidies available for eligible applicants).

NU6171 Principles in Intensive care Nursing
Module Overview:
This online module aims to provide a gateway for qualified nurses to work in Critical Care, or for nurses currently working in Critical Care to further develop their repertoire of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional values. This is particularly relevant when addressing the potential redeployment of nursing staff to Critical Care to manage covid-19 patients and for ICU avoidance for Covid-19 patients.
Start Date: Oct. 11th (6 weeks)
Module Delivery:
The module will be delivered online incorporating both synchronous and asynchronous teaching methodologies. Multiple teaching and learning approaches will be utilized to facilitate learning and its application to clinical practice. Over the duration of the module (6 weeks) students will participate in a total of two 6 hour online workshops (using a blend of synchronous and asynchronous delivery methods) which will be integrated into the module schedule.
Workshop dates: Oct 15th & Nov. 4th
Entry Requirements:
1. Applicants must be practising nurses with evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or evidence that registration with the NMBI will be complete by the proposed commencement date of the module.
2. Applicants must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).
