Patrick Fitzpatrick holds a BSc in Mathematics from Surrey University, UK, a PGCE from Sussex University, UK, and a PhD in Mathematics from the Australian National University. He spent 35 years in UCC as Lecturer/Professor in Mathematics, publishing extensively in the fields of algebra and coding theory, as well as engaging in numerous academic leadership roles. He was Dean of Science and founding Head of the UCC College of Science, Engineering and Food Science between 2005 and 2013. In that role he led multiple projects though scoping to completion including the reorganisation of three existing Faculties into the College structure. He had devolved responsibility for finance, and human and physical resources, and for strategic planning in the College through two 5-year cycles. In 2015, he played a pivotal role in the year-long celebration of the 200th anniversary of George Boole. He also led a number of external projects such as the establishment of Energy Cork and the UCC-Teagasc Alliance.
Following formal retirement from UCC, Patrick joined UCC Academy in 2014. His principal roles are as academic lead of UCC’s strategy for internationalisation with India and South Asia, and as head of PrimeUCC, a unit dedicated to assisting researchers to apply successfully for funding especially under Horizon 2020. He also works on a range of other projects within UCC Academy.
