Core Competencies Education

The core competencies for Programmes in the School of Education subject to Fitness to Practise are listed below. In addition to these competencies, students must also fulfil the requirements of the Teaching Council in order to be able to register as a teacher when they graduate.   Student teachers must be capable of achieving the following competencies and learning outcomes by graduation:

a)  Be able to take steps to manage personal stress, mental and physical health, and well-being and to consult and follow the advice of a suitably qualified professional on any risk posed by own mental/physical health.
b) Be able to communicate appropriately and effectively with pupils and all other stakeholders involved in the education process.
c) Be in possession of sound professional judgement and be aware of and responsive to the impact of one’s actions on self and on others.
d) Be able to remain alert at all times.
e) Be capable of responding to the needs of pupils and other stakeholders involved in the education process in an appropriate and effective manner.
f) Be aware of and apply the ethics and values of the teaching profession in all communications and actions associated with the performance of their professional roles and responsibilities as outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers (The Teaching Council, 2nd Edition 2016).
