The Department of Modern Irish celebrated a remarkable double at the National University of Ireland awards ceremony held at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham recently.

First place in the two Irish scholarships on offer was taken by UCC students. The prestigious Mansion House Fund Scholarship in Irish was awarded to Máiréad Carey. The Dr Henry Hutchinson Stewart Literary Scholarship in Irish was awarded to Aisling Ní Dhonnabháin. Both awards were made on the basis of results achieved in their respective third year and first year summer examinations in 2015.

This recognition for the teaching of Irish at UCC comes at a time when first year numbers for the academic year 2015-16 have risen to unprecedented levels. The Irish Department's structured programme of Gaeltacht residency options, recently introduced, is seen as contributing significantly to the enhanced profile of the discipline in UCC.

In addition, innovations in research-led and online teaching in the Irish Department, particularly with the successful launch this year of the online MA in Gaelic Literature, are also viewed as giving the Department of Modern Irish an imaginative niche-position in this traditional subject area.
