The Irish Association for Asian Studies (IAAS) has been formed at a special workshop at the Irish Management Institute in Dublin organised by Dr Kevin Cawley.

Dr Cawley is Director of the Irish Institute of Korean Studies.

The aim of IAAS is to promote Asian Studies in Ireland, and to advance education through the critical and analytical study of Asia and Asia-related topics by providing a forum for scholarly activity. It will also seek to foster a variety of academic activities, such as conferences, seminars, workshops and publications.

The event was attended by scholars from several Irish institutions, both in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The development highlights the significant multi-disciplinary academic expertise that exists on the entire island of Ireland in relation to Asia.

It will also provide a space to bring together leading scholars who engage with all aspects of research on Asia from pre-modern times until the present day.

The main officers of the IAAS include:

  • Professor Jackie Sheehan (President) – UCC
  • Dr Kevin Cawley (Secretary) - UCC
  • Dr Ryoko Sasamoto (Treasurer) – DCU

Other Committee Officers:

  • Dr Xin Sun – TCD
  • Dr Li Xiuping – Ulster University
