Professor Grace Neville, former Vice-President for Teaching and Learning at UCC, has been chairing an international committee responsible for evaluating projects bidding for a total of €12 million in funding.

The process has been ongoing over the last six months at the French National Research Agency / Agence Nationale de la Recherche. The initiative is designed to promote the digital agenda in French higher education.

Last week, Professor Neville presented the jury’s recommendations at a meeting in the French Ministry for Education. The projects were submitted by c. 300 higher education establishments in collaboration with c. 150 IT companies throughout France.

The promotion of the digital agenda is one of the 3 key priorities for higher education under French Government policy, the other two being the promotion of quality in teaching and learning and the promotion of lifelong learning. The focus of the projects varied widely, and included student entrepreneurship, simulated micro-surgery, and interventions designed to help disadvantaged students.

Professor Neville’s committee comprised 14 academics from seven countries, including a former Swedish Secretary of State and a former Belgian Government Minister’s chef de cabinet. Over the next three to five years, this committee will collaborate in monitoring the successful projects.
