A series of pamphlets on the Irish famine was launched by Cork University Press and Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum in Dublin this week.

Cork University Press will sell and market worldwide the Famine Folios series.  The series is a unique resource for students, scholars and researchers, as well as general readers, covering many aspects of the Famine in Ireland from 1845–1852 – the worst demographic catastrophe of nineteenth-century Europe. The essays are interdisciplinary in nature, and make available new research in Famine studies by internationally established scholars in history, art history, cultural theory, philosophy, media history, political economy, literature and music.

The US Ambassador to Ireland, Kevin F O’Malley, spoke about the new series at the launch.  The pamphlets are produced to the highest level, beautifully illustrated with works from the Museum and related collections

There will be 14 books in the series of which the first four are now published:

Luke Gibbons, Limits of the Visible: Representing the Great Hunger
Christine Kinealy, Apparitions of Death and Disease: The Great Hunger in Ireland
Catherine Marshall, Monuments, Memorials and Visualizations of the Great Famine in Ireland
Niamh O’Sullivan, The Tombs of a Departed Race: Illustrations of Ireland’s Great Hunger
