Module Objective: To familiarise students with the long-term consequences of European colonialism in Africa with a focus on the Great Lakes Crisis.

Module Content: Through the study of a diverse range of primary texts, including historical documents, political writings, literary works and newspaper articles, students will learn about the long-term consequences of European colonialism in Africa with a focus on the Great Lakes region. In particular, students will learn how porous, overlapping boundaries - based on culture, trade and language - were replaced with neat, rigid delineations, based on Western imperial interests; how traditional subsistence economies were destroyed by the pursuit of resources needed to fuel European manufacturing needs; how independence led many emerging African nations to stagnate as they found themselves caught between French neo-colonialism and US cold war interests; how the collapse of the communist empire highlighted unanswered questions about legitimacy, citizenship, identity, democracy and poverty, resulting eventually in the 1994 Rwanda genocide; and finally how fermenting democratic ideas, the realities of persistent institutional authoritarianism, and continued failures and misunderstandings of the international community, provided the conditions for this crisis to spread, leading to what some scholars have termed "Africa's World War".

Module Content: The module will consider how the travel narrative written in French has evolved in the past two centuries. What forms do recits de voyage take? Who gets to be a travel writer, and what kind of 'travel' qualifies? Can the testimony of a refugee be considered a travel narrative, or the description of a daily commute to work? We will draw on a wide range of Francophone travellers' stories in order to expand our idea of what travel writing might look like. Students will reflect on the diversity of the modern recit de voyage genre in terms of format, themes and authorship; how text and images work together in travel writing; how journeys undertaken both locally and globally are narrated by authors writing in French; and how reading a travel narrative encourages us to perceive the world around us and its inhabitants differently.

Module Objective: To examine the Franco-Algerian relationship from the perspective of a contested past as mediated by literature and film as well as commemorative sites of memory in Paris.

Module Content: We will analyse cultural artefacts (literary prose, films and commemorative sites and monuments) as constructs of personal memory and national identity within the context of France and Algeria. In doing this, we examine the contested narratives of Algerian and French history but with specific reference to the Algerian war of independence (1954-62), the events of October 17 1961 and their afterlives within sites of memory (lieux de memoire) that bear testimony to different ways of commemorating those events, different ways of remembering and forgetting the past.

Module Content: The module will examine a representative range of examples of theatrical practice in France in the post-1968 period. Plays by writers such as Marguerite Duras, Nathalie Sarraute, Philippe Minyana, Michel Vinaver, Noelle Renaude and Valere Novarina will be examined. Filmed productions of the plays, on DVD, will be used where possible to facilitate the study of theatrical style and technique. Students will be encouraged to consider the plays in terms of their potential for performance.

Module Content: Through the study of a wide range of materials including visual culture, music, press articles and literary texts, students will examine Haiti as a vibrant example of contemporary Afro-Caribbean society and culture. In the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti's capital in January 2010, foreign policy advisors, experts and Haitians themselves called for a greater global understanding of the country's rich history and culture alongside the current issues it faces today. This module responds by examining Haiti's cultural and political landscape through four major themes: revolution, dictatorship, diaspora and disaster. In recent times, Haiti has been described as the 'Republic of NGOs', and students will critically evaluate the post-earthquake involvement of foreign charities and non-governmental bodies in Haitian society.

Module Content: This module will introduce students to theories of trauma from Freud to the present day. Through the study of a range of francophone texts about major traumatic events (WWII, the Rwanda genocide, terrorism etc.), students will examine the strengths and weaknesses of different theories and consider the role of narrative in understanding atrocity. The module will also encourage students to contemplate the politics and ethics involved in representing what is often considered 'unrepresentable'.

Module Content: The module will examine a representative range of examples of cinematic practice in France in the period 1950-2010. Films by leading cinematographers such as Agnes Varda, Robert Bresson, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Mathieu Kassowitz, MoufidaTlatli, Chantal Ackerman and Claire Denis will be examined. Students will consider the films from the perspectives of film theory, feminist and gender theory, and postmodern theories of subjectivity.

Topics studied will include such questions as why we identify with heroic men and women, from Achilles and Andromache to today's postmodern icons; why we need heroic figures to be imperfect; why the heroic remains a dominant world-cultural icon.
