UCC Innovation launches Impact Report for 2023

2023 was a busy year of innovative and entrepreneurial activity across the UCC campus, with 4 spin-outs created, 29 start-ups supported, 39 consulting contracts with businesses and 65 participants completing either the SPRINT accelerator or IGNITE incubation programmes. UCC Innovation’s Impact Report 2023 highlights the achievements of UCC researchers as they work to develop economic and societal impact from their expertise, research and creativity.

Researchers discover hidden step in dinosaur feather evolution

Scientists discover ‘zoned development’ in dinosaur skin, with zones of reptile-style scales and zones of bird-like skin with feathers. New dinosaur skin fossil found to be composed of silica – the same as glass. Discovery sheds light on evolution from scales to feathers.

The Irish Times has chosen Prof Brian Ó Gallachóir as the recipient of the inaugural Positive Impacts award, in association with EirGrid. The award was presented by Kevin O’Sullivan, Environment and Science Editor at The Irish Times and Doireann Barry, Chief Corporate Services Officer at EirGrid, at the Positive Impacts event which took place on Tuesday, May 21st in 1 Windmill Lane.

Listening to mental health podcasts reduces stigma

New UCC study shows how listening to mental health podcasts positively influences mental health literacy. Mental health podcasts reduce stigma and increase help seeking behaviour. Results indicate that podcasts are being utilised by those who are frustrated with gaps in access to mental health services.
