13 June, 2002   Update No. 8
BAILII / IRLII Updates
The BAILII and IRLII websites have undergone significant improvements in recent months.
The British and Irish Legal Information Institute (BAILII) website is at www.bailii.org
The Irish Legal Information Initiative (IRLII) website is at www.irlii.org
The Irish material on BAILII and IRLII is processed at University College Cork Law Faculty and financial support is provided by UCC Law Faculty, the Law Society of Ireland, the Arthur Cox Foundation and others.

There are now 1205 High Court and 566 Supreme Court cases on the BAILII site. While most of these date from 1997 on, there are a number of 'leading cases' from earlier years. A subject listing of the leading cases is available at www.cases.irlii.org

A recent feature added to the IRLII site is the Index of Cases at www.index.irlii.org
This is a unique database of all judgments from 1997 to date, with links to BAILII versions where available. This database will act as a supplement to the old Green and Red Indexes which some of you may have used over the years.

Using the Index

  • The Index is organised by year and by court, sorted chronologically.
  • Where the decision has been reported in either the Irish Reports or the Irish Law Reports Monthly, the citation for that report is included. (Note: some cases may have been reported elsewhere, e.g. the Employment Law Reports; these citations are not included.)
  • Where the decision is available on BAILII, the BAILII catalogue number is included; this number is linked to the text of the decision on BAILII. Recent cases not yet available on BAILII may be available in the Latest Cases section on IRLII.
  • To search for a particular decision, simply type the name of the plaintiff or defendant into the search engine and click "find". A table of results will be generated. Netscape Users: The Search Engine on the Index requires Netscape 6.2 or higher. You can download it free from Netscape.
  • To search while viewing the index page, either scroll through the index or press CTRL + F to activate the "Find" function on your browser and type in the name of the Plaintiff or Defendant. This will find, in turn, each occurrence of the name you type in; simply continue clicking on "Find Next" until you find the case that you are looking for. Any spelling error will result in a failure to find the name you are searching for.
  • The Titles of the decisions are given in accordance with the Conventions of Citation observed in relation to all Irish material on BAILII. These Conventions should be observed when searching for a case in the Index; for example, searching for a case as "DPP" will not return any results, as this will always be listed as "D.P.P.".
  • Warning: Files are large (Supreme Court approx 250 KB each, High Court approx 400 KB each); loading may take a little time.

Irish Acts are available at www.bailii.org/ie/legis/num_act/  with more recent Acts at www.statutes.irlii.org
