1. Data Protection Commissioner's new site
The Data Protection Commissioner, Mr Joe Meade, has a new website at
The site includes the full text of annual reports for 1997, 1998 and 1999.
There is a 'case studies' section at http://www.dataprivacy.ie/5z.htm
including for example a case where a school was told not to publish personal data about pupils on its website.
The Commissioner has also warned websites to have clear privacy statements - see the Irish Times article at http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/finance/2000/1221/fin6.htm
The Irish Law site at http://www.irish-law.org now contains such a statement linked from the top of the main page.
2. High Court orders Liam Lawlor TD to be jailed for contempt
The High Court has ordered Liam Lawlor TD to be jailed for contempt of court due to his failure to comply with court orders requiring him to co-operate with the Flood Tribunal (http://www.flood-tribunal.ie).
This is the first time an Irish court has ordered that a public representative be jailed for any reason related to the various tribunals of inquiry which are ongoing at present. It is possible that Mr Lawlor will appeal yesterday's ruling to the Supreme Court.
