Why do human beings inevitably generate 'civilisation' (however rudimentary), with all its admirable and problematic aspects? Why do we not simply live in harmony with nature? These are age-old questions, but they particularly fascinated the writers of Spain's Golden Age. The most distinguished poet of the 17th century, Luis de Góngora (1561-1627) wrestled with them throughout his career, and in his Soledades (long pastoral poems produced in his maturity), he articulated them with unsurpassed skill. The course will look at a selection of his earlier poetry in Term I as a preparation for reading the Soledad primera in Term II.
