Biochemistry for the public

Just as mathematics is the language of the physical sciences, biochemistry is the language of biology. Biochemistry is at the heart of advances in molecular biology and biotechnology and their many applications in medicine, agriculture and pharmaceutics. Breakthroughs in biochemistry frequently make headline news. The Department is therefore mindful that some basic understanding of biochemistry is necessary in order for the public to appreciate and participate in important on-going debates, e.g. the ethical implications of potential applications of molecular genetics.

One member of staff of the Department, Professor William Reville, writes the weekly Science Today column in The Irish Times. He has also published a selection of these columns as a book – ‘Understanding the Natural World: Science Today’ (Irish Times Books, 1999), which is popular with teachers who present science in Transition Year at second level.

Professor Reville has co-ordinated a Science Public Lecture Series at UCC in 2009 (brochure ~1 MB) academic year and a significant proportion of these lectures are devoted to biochemical/biological topics.
