The New Squash Club Summer Times are as follows:
Please share the courts fairly among yourselves and post on our Facebook Group if you want games. Priority goes to ladder matches. Have a nice summer!
The UCC Men's A team, consisting of Jaime Balbuena, Frank Ryan, Fionn O'Brien, Michael Ryan and Donal Coughlan, were seeking to defend the title they had won last year. Having convincingly overcome 2011 champions Queen's University Belfast in a 5-matches-to-nil triumph in their opening fixture, UCC faced University of Ulster Jordanstown (UUJ) in what was effectively a semi-final in their second match.
Donal was first on court, getting UCC off to an ideal start with a 3-1 win over his UUJ counterpart. Michael followed Donal's lead, recording another 3-1 victory with an impressive display of controlled and clinical squash to put UCC 2-0 up, needing only one more victory to reach the final. Next up was the top seeds, with Jaime putting his undefeated inter-varsity record on the line against the UUJ number 1, a former Irish under-19 champion who had first represented the Ulster Senior team at only 16 years of age. Despite putting in a valiant performance Jaime lost out 3-1 in a hotly contested encounter.
Fionn then took to the court, but agonisingly failed to convert either of two match points before eventually losing 3-2, meaning the fixture went down to the final match. Frank raced into a 2-0 lead playing exquisite squash, but it was clearly not to be UCC's day as another match point went begging before UUJ went on to win 3-2, meaning that UCC exited the competition after the narrowest of defeats. A disappointing outcome for a talented UCC team who were unfortunate to fall short against formidable opponents.

The finals of the Men's B were also markedly close, and strongly contested. After having beaten strong QUB and UUJ teams to reach the final, the men were so close yet so far away, as they were narrowly beaten by TCD in an adrenaline pumping final. Although bitterly disappointing results, both teams played exquisite squash and demonstrated immense skill and determination.
The men's C team performed at a particularly high standard, in a relatively long day of games, with all the players having some very long and strongly contested matches throughout the day. The team did well against NUIG, beating them with a clean sweep, as well as beating DCU; they were consequently disappointed to lose to Trinity College Dublin. The number 1 and 2 slots of the team were of a particularly high standard, with Conor Pullin performing particularly well, winning all of his matches. All of the games against the final champions TCD were strongly contested games, with lots of long and skilful rallies.
Left to Right: Donal Horgan, Sean O'Sullivan, Omar Aziz, Michael Hanrahan, Cathal Hannon, Liam O'Mahony
With regard to the Ladies A team, although quite a new team, and relatively inexperienced they performed well against a very strong RCSI team, who were the eventual inter-varsity champions. Throughout the games, there were numerous brilliant shots and rallies, demonstrating the skill and potential that exists within the team.
Although a very new team, the Ladies B team, didn't let the nerves get to them and performed strongly throughout the weekend. During the first round of games against DCU, the team performed very strongly, winning almost all their games in straight sets. The Ladies B also put up a strong fight, confidently beating DCU before unfortunately losing to a strong UCD team. The ladies B captain, Orlaith Nishuilleabhain put in a notably solid performance against the UCD number 2, Who was coincidentally on the UCC ladies A team at last year's inter-varsities.
As Aidan Daly, the Men's C captain put it, this year's inter-varsities were filled with "great games, great fun and was an overall good experience." A sentiment that I am sure is echoed by all of the competitors.
