Committee 09/10 and Student Individuals 10/4/9 So the AGM is over, and a new committee has been voted in. And the winners are.... Captain: Marie Kotzur Best of luck to them in the
coming year! They are certainly a group with the potential to take the
club to an even better place than it is now. In other news, it's necessary to draw attention to some recent success that UCC had at the Student Championships in Maynooth. By UCC, in this case, we really mean Aoife o'Loughlin, who failed only in women's epee to place in the top three, coming third in foil and second in sabre. Aoife was also recognised as the highest placed novice in both weapons. Let's see three weapons the next time!
Intervarsities 09 3/2/9 Another Intervarsities comes to an end, and once again Trinity College dominates. Congratulations to them for taking first place in all weapons, bar Men's Sabre which went to DKIT. UCC managed to come in at fourth place, which is quite an achievement considering that much of the team was made up of relatively inexperienced fencers. Well done lads, the future is bright for UCC! Special mention must go to our ladies foil and sabre teams, who came second in their respective weapons. We are proud! Schull 08 27/11/8 Well done to UCC's fencers in what was another well fought Schull Novice Cup. It was the biggest entry for the competition on record, which made for a great depth to the matches. It's great to see last year's beginners get results for their continued effort, and it is perhaps even greater to see our newest fencers beginning to succeed in competition already. Top placings were:
Big congratulations to Aoife for taking first place in women's foil. UCC is proud! Well done also to Jacinta and Hui for coming in second in their respective events after equally impressively fought competitions. Special congratulations go to Yukiko for coming third in the competition after only a few weeks of fencing. Seeing a new fencer with such potential is a great boost for the club, and she can only move up from here. Each and every fencer from UCC who fought in the competition has reason to be proud, and even those who may have been unhappy with their performance can see it as a chance to regroup and be ready for the next competition. The club would like to thank everyone who helped in any way and, most importantly, all who attended. It's really a pleasure to see the competition build each year, and that could never happen without everyone's enthusiasm. Pictures can be found here, and full results can be found here. Souths, Schull, and Cyrano 6/10/8 So a good deal has happened since the last news update. Perhaps most significantly, we are now into a new season and have a fantastic group of beginners who are rapidly developing into able fencers. It'll be great to see them progress over the coming months under the guidance of our coaches. If people can stretch there memories back to August, they may recall that we held the South of Ireland Open, which was a great success. As always, thanks to all involved in making the competition what it was. Without this generous minority in Irish fencing, the sport would certainly be in far worse shape than it is and we are always in their debt. Specific congratulations to Orla Cullen for winning women's epee, as well as Rieke Hayes and Michalis Kirimlidis for each taking third place in women's and men's foil, respectively. Full results can be found here. Moving forward to the next UCC competition, we have the annual Schull Novice Cup, which this year takes place on the 8th of November. Once again, the Schull Cup will take place in the Mardyke Arena in Cork City. This competition is open to all foilists who have been fencing for less than two years, and is a great way for beginners to ease themselves into the wonderful world of competitive fencing. Finally, fencing in Cork has recently received a welcome boost with the opening of Cyrano Fencing club. Unlike UCC, Cyrano is able to cater for non-students looking to fence. Considerable work has gone into this highly worthwhile project, and there is no doubt that it will be a great success. Further information can be found at their website, http://cyranofencing.blogspot.com/. We wish them the best of luck.
