Hello all, I'm going to the wall at 7pm. from Gaol Cross if anyone is interested. I'm leaving Midleton again at about 8.30 or 8.45 though. Also, Jen if you see this before then could you bring me in the shoes if you think of it cos' I'll be needing them.((But I'm pretty sure you don't carry shoes around college in general so I'll try to get them off you tomorrow if poss.). Thanks. And yep if anyone is thinking of ever doing the REC course, it's well worth your while.

My apologies for my long absence from the comment page. I have been working the long hours deep into the night, reading through dusty forgotten books of ancient times. Some people have been aware of my research for quite a while. To them I can only apologise for the delay in getting results, results which I can today reveal to and, I think, astonish the world with. They are as follows:

The "N." in Guy N. Smith stands for "Newman".

I just wish to pay tribute to the investigative powers of Diarmaid Coffey ; but , also to the literary prowess of Mr N. Smith . "The Walking Dead" , which I am currently reading , is more than simply a sequel to "The Sucking Pit" - it expands the horrorific possibilities of the latter , and also makes many pertinent points about rural ennui , as well as having an excellent sideswipe at uncontrolled building ( especially on ancient Romany burial "pits" ). Bravo , Mr N. Smith ! Bravo Mr Coffey ! Run , run , for Cornelius , the hulking , evil Romany chap has returned from the dead !
The Strauss Ball was brilliant .

When is the weekend away- next weekend or the one afterwards.
I got a nice bit of Guy N. Smith trivia- He has produced 6 books in the successful "Crabs" series- starting with the famous "night of the Crabs", following this up with the prequel "Crabs' Moon" before firing out a futher 4 sequels in quick succession. What I want to know is this- why are our friends in Munster Literature not excited by this? Why? I'll tell you why- because they sit in there in their office, snapping their braces, smoking their pipes, patting each other's backs, occasionally making half-hearted passes at Maura Quinn, the rotund author of "Cold Sweat" and generally feeling very good about their own little world, but when a writer of the talent of Guy comes along, threatening to blast them out of their cosy existence, they run around like headless chickens, crying: "What's to be done with Guy N. Smith." In short they are frightened. I have read the last 8 issues of Southword and have failed to see the slightest mention of "The Sucking Pit", "Thirst" and "Carnivore IV- The Beast Returns...Again", to my mind three of the finest novels of the year.
Munster Literature Centre- Come to your senses. Feel the force of Guy N. Smith- words are his power.

Keep off the hills !

The Mountaineering Council of Ireland (MCI ) has been advised by the Department of Agriculture that all hill-walkers and climbers, not just those who have recently been in the UK, should now keep off the hills until it is declared safe to return.

The Executive of the MCI will meet this (Wednesday) evening to discuss the situation, and further information will follow shortly.

Sure, there are plenty of other things you can do like brushing up on your rock-climbing skills. As long as you're not close to farmland, I wouldn't envisage too many problems. A wee manhunt* in Currabinny woods is on the cards for the ever energetic members of CITMC.

*Manhunt=ancient pagan ritual where all the climbers are set free and a predator-like creature hunts them all down. Cork Ramblers have been invited as special guests...;-) Similar to "run away", the game where an alien xenomorph is let loose in a contained enviroment with well-dressed hillwalkers for company. Weapons include walking poles and pen knives!!!

In the mountains, nobody cares if you scream...

Got this from Finbarr

Hi,
Finally heading north of the equator tomorrow just in
time for my third summer in a row.I should be in
Bangkok by tomorrow night and all going well i'll have
a flight from there to Kathmandu within a couple of
days.
Since i last wrote,i've spent a little over three
weeks
in New Zeland,a week in Hobart and a week in
Sydney.New
Zeland was nice but far too rushed and awkard without
a car.I spent a couple of weeks in mt Cook village
treking around the mountains.Great place but too late
in the season to get up on the high peaks due to the
state of the glaciers. After that i hitched around for
a week just doing the standard tourist trail.
Bumped into Donough and Clare in Wanaka. They were in
good form after their adventures. They are planning to
settle in to a few months of work before heading on
again.
Hobart was fun as always,mostly
mountainbiking.Sydney's
is really hot and humid at the moment so i'm looking
forward to getting back to some cool weather.I know
Bangkok will be worse but i shouldn't be there too
long.
I was lucky enough to catch Mardi gras in Sydney last
week.Completely off the wall,but excellent.We managed
to get a place right next to the parade so we'd a
great night.
No other real news.Any news from home besides the foot
and mouth saga?I hope it doesn't effect climbing for
too much longer.
Talk to you soon,
Finbarr.

hey bryan,
by all means you can suggest a change to the consitution, however to make any amendments to the consitution or other motions official you must submit your amendment of the consitution or any other motion in writing to secretary, ie Jenny, two weeks prior to the AGM date. A vote will then be made on that motion or constitution amendment where a majority vote must accept it.

Hey Everyone, does anyone have any news? I got this email from Finbarr last week. Sounds like he is having a mad time! Oh yeah, the old comment page is bust, but should be back up soon. Bryan will be sorting it out.
Hi all, Just got back to Kathmandu today after a month in the hills.Had a great time but didn't get a peak in.Without a permit this area is too well policed to get away with much.Had a try but someone i met along the way decided to tell a Liason officer.Nice guy,he made me fresh rice bread at base camp before threating to arrest me.We came to an agreement that i'd leave and he wouldn't shoot me!Shame since at that point i'd spent over two weeks sleeping at 5300m or above. Most days i climbed to 5500/5600m to get fit and i really felt ready to go a lot higher.Another time maybe. I left Kathmandu mid March and walked in from Jiri lugging a big pack. The first few days almost killed me but by the time i reached Namche Bazare eight days later i was in good form.I had three porters with me carring food and gas for two people(Ian,Scot. who came along for the fun)for six weeks.I had to change crew after day one as the first lot tryed to rob me and sell my tent.At Nanche i changed to a Yak train to prevent my porters who were from the lowlands from getting AMS.Finally after many mishaps i arrived at base camp another six days later with all my gear.I had a few days on my own before Ian arrived.I used this time to explore the surronding area.So much to do and so few cheap permits. When Ian arrived we started climbing a nearby ridge every day to get used to the altitude. We felt ready after a couple of weeks to move camp and have a go at something. That was when we had to leave.Maybe it was just as well as Ian had just got Gardia and i was beginning to get it as well. The morning that we left i was as weak as dish water. We had a hard time coming down but now that we're back in Kathmandu the health is fine and we're eating like pigs. I'm not sure of the plans at the moment.I might go paddling here or maybe cragging in the South of Thailand.I'll check with the bank manager in a few days time.I'll let you know. What news?I haven't seen a news paper or tv in a long time.Let me know what's happened in the world and back in Ireland.See you, Finbarr.

Hi everybody!

It has been a while since I posted something and so I hope everybody is doing fine (except for the little detail that you cannot do much mountaineering in Ireland now).

A month ago I spent the spring break in California in the Joshua Tree National Park which is a desert place with strange piles of granite rocks. Nice hiking, very good place for rock climbing, too.

So if you'd like to see some pictures of the opposite to Ireland (dry, hot, and sunny), check out www.math.uconn.edu/~horak/joshua.html. I still miss Ireland though.

Cheers, Jiri

Hey I got this from Finbarr just two seconds ago:
Hi, finally left Nepal after almost two months.Had a great time but my visa was up and it was time to move on. Since my last message i was sick with a dodgy stomach and that took up a week of my time.Just as well i had access to a hotel, chemists and the other comforts of Kathmandu instead of been in the hills. After that i did the standard tourist temple tour stuff for a week while i got my strength back. I rented a mt bike and hired a guide for a day to do some technical riding but it wasn't up to much.Combined two differant tours for a 60km circuit through the hills around Kathmandu but the downhills were boring. It was a bit of exercise and the views were nice but not hard enough. A couple of days later i managed to get a job as a safety kayaker for one of the rafting companies.I spent a week down in Pokhara and did one river, the Kali Kandaki. The river wasn't too hard but i had to do a lot of work as i was looking after three rafts.I was offered more work when i got back but it wasn't worth extending my visa for pre monsoon rivers. Got a flight after the usual messing about with the airlines and arrived in Bangkok a few days ago. It's very hot and humid here so i'm looking forward to heading South tomorrow to Krabi.I should be on a beach next to limestone crags by tomorrow night. See you, Finbarr.

I wandered lonely as a cloud
Wandered over hill and dale
Wandered and sang for joy aloud
Until I trod upon a snail
At which I gave a poetic wail
And so my spirit was quickly cowed
But I walked on, my head unbowed

I came upon a farmhouse pink
Came, and saw it was my fate
To talk to the owner, make him think
His windows green and blue his gate
Colours hard as hard agate
And verily my eye's did blink
For wanderers' eyes need no such swink

The farmer appeared, face all red
With a winchester rifle on his hand
And not a hair upon his head.
Roaring loud "Ger off moi land!
And your poetry, dumb and bland
You killed my snail, the fair Mildred
And now you'll die, until you're dead!"

I pleaded with him, tied in his shed
"I'm a lonely wanderer of great fame"
And then his face grew still more red
"Now I know why my sheep are lame!
You're the poxy git who is to blame!"
And aiming his gun at my head
He gave me a dose of righteous lead.

I'm soooooooooo bored right now.

But everyone's going to be too busy, aren't ye?

Well the excellent people at UKLinux.net, which I can't recommend enough, have spotted the problem and told me what it is. Everything's working again - well, everything that was working before is working again. All the other stuff is gonna have to wait for two-point-oh.

For anyone out who want to know the technical details, the system decided a few weeks back it was only going to work with files which used a Unix style newline after the first line. Some of the scripts have somehow ended up with Windows style ones (which have an extra blank character).

After surviving quite an adventure on the snow laden slopes of April time near Chamonix some weeks ago, small twitches have begun to set in.

We must go back. Absolutely must. When is the question? Floundering about in springtime snow loses it's appeal when you take three hours to climb (easy gully in summer) 200m. That particular episode required using the quite comfy accomodation of a ski-lift control room as we were nowhere near where we meant to be.

The next day brought much excitement as the boys in ski suits dropped explosives onto snow laden slopes in order to bury us in soft, fluffy snow. To make up for it, they sent the piste-making machines ahead of us to give us something to walk on.

Despite many entreaties to the contrary, three young climbers/fools were still on the white rolling hills at 9:30pm before deciding to check into a hotel. This hotel was a special one. It consisted of a tree and a big hollow underneath it's branches. We were required to check out at daybreak due to the snow on the branches melting and falling on top of us.

By this stage, the melted snow and ice was starting to taste a bit awful because one of our number never cleaned out the pot properly and all water had the distinct tang of mushroom soup and it was never nice mushroom soup in the first place. To counteract this, we stopped drinking this rancid water...not as wise as we first thought.

Being the only one with suncream and decent goggles, I watched in despair as my companions turned pink, then red and finally purple. Perhaps a stronger suncream than factor 20 is required for Alpine climbing.

Not deterred by these frightful happenings, we set upon Mt. Blanc du Tacul as our next objective. The cable car to Aig. du Midi was to be our primary mode of transport followed by much shuffling in our hired snowshoes. Sheer terror set in at the top of the cable car while we pondered upon our descent ridge.

Cosmiques hut became the focus of our attentions and the click-clacking of our snow shoes provided an irritating backdrop to the cold, bare waste about us. Things hardly brightened up at the hut where the guardian looked very surprised to meet us. In fact, he told us go away. Well maybe not that but it was clear that the mountain was not to be ours that day. Altitude was chipping away at our haemogloblin and this was hardly surprising due to the scatty nature of our acclimitisation programme.

A hasty retreat was beaten back down the cable car. Indeed, we could hardly but help notice that when we were ascending the ridge back to Aig. du Midi, the workers were fixing fence posts faster than we were walking up the slope. Brrr...it was chilly there. Bare metal stuck to anything that touched it...such as skin.

Now after these enjoyable happenings, we know we must go back. Any of ye planning to go to the MCI Alpine meet this summer?

Hi all-
As some of you already know, Harry and I are going to Ailefroide again this July... Now I know that most of you seem to be otherwise occupied (with jobs..for God sake), but if anyone happens to be in the vicinity we'll be there from the 30th June - 13th July, in case any of you get a mad fit and ditch your responsibilities (you know you want to!!)....
See ye all soon,
Love 'n' bubbles,

There's going to be a demonstration/peaceful picnic on the Old Head of Kinsale on the 1st July 2-6pm. The organiser's aim is to have alot of people turn up and proceed to have a picnic, as a demonstration to the people who own the golf course. PLEASE GO, it would be GREAT if it was freed up for climbing again...

On another subject Jiri I understand the zenophobic message the rejection of the Nice treaty appears to have sent out.For my part I didn't make it to the poll's as I felt it was a shoe in.When I heard the results I was surprised and disappointed and I can't help feeling there were a lot of people in the same boat as me.However for Ireland expansion can only be a good thing as it increases the market for our exports on which our economy is dependant. Isolationist policies never worked for Ireland and retarded our development when it was somewhat forced on us after the economic war with Britain.

2. An módh foshuiteach láithreach.
3. Focal amháin: Peig.
4. Focal eile: Foinse.
5. Duine amháin: Seán Bán Breathnach.

Just to give you all fair warning, here in the most fashion conscious region of the most fashion conscious country in the world, hand tans rock. Probably the best way to get one in to do a few multi-pitches in long sleeved thermals.

If anybody is interested in a bit of the camping down Kerry way this weekend, then come along! It shouldn't be too wet. Also, we will get to listen to the Dublin cars beeping their horns as they go round the blind corners and filling up from the 5-gallon drums of petrol that they got in Sallynoggin, wha? Bleedin' Rapid.

Could one of you send me the instructions on how to ftp into the club's webpage (the server, login name and password would do nicely). I'll be making a few updates, probably near the end of next week.

By the way, is it possible to telnet in?

Before I get accused of neglecting my duties, the reason the committee page has not been updated yet is that the OCM's have not told me yet which position each of them will be occupying. Furthermore, due to an upgrade to the UCC web server, our access details have been changed and I'm currently in the process of finding out the new ones. So when I have them I'll e-mail Bryan and let him know what the story is for access to the files.
