Comments: Plans are afoot to go to the Alps this summer. Provisionally the last 3 weeks in August is what's being suggested, well that's when I'll be there anyway. Anyone interested in doing some cool stuff should have a serious think about it. We'll be based out of Argentiere, 5 miles up the valley from Chamonix, great spot! Routes can be found in Rebuffats book on the third floor of the Boole, some possibilities are Forbes Arete on the Aiguille du Chardonnet, some sick thing on Mt. Dolent, possibly something on Les Courtes, north face of La Tour Ronde, Gervasutti Couloir on Mt. Blanc du Tacul and then just for Diarmuid Coffey, the Brenva Spur on Mt. Blanc. Everyone is welcome and believe me these are only some of the possibilities! Hope to see you there, Mike.....

Well it was a fantastic weekend. Things
got off to a great start with a night navigation/
team race, with a bottle of whiskey as a prize.
Rachael and company made it back first, shortly
followed by Connor and his gang (three cheers
for Judy, for putting up with us lot!!!!)
A few of the more dedicated climbers got
excited over a table, providing much amusement
to all by trying to climb under it.

Saturday was one of those days that seem to
happen only in stories - glorious sunshine,
not a breeze, and the best was made of the
weather, altough some decided to head back
early to catch the Rugby Match on TV... their loss!
John and Tony went rockclimbing, Diarmuid and
Aidan decided that running the horseshoe was
the thing to do, everyone else doodled up
towards Tooth Mountain, shedding Connor, Hugh
and Cormac (they went bouldering), and Frank
who decided to solo one of the delightful slabs
running up the right side of the Col.
Singing didn't really materialise on the saturday
night, blame has been placed squarely on the
amount of alcohol consumed.

It was revenge of the weather on Sunday, with
rain squalls becoming more and more frequent.
Hugh decided that it was time for another walk
and disappeared for a few hours, the rest of
the group tried a trot down the road, got wet
and retreated to the pub for warmth and shelter
A quiet bus journey back rounded off what has
to be described as a truely memorable weekend!

Dear UCCMC

A slightly belated thank you for a great weekend (12/2).
It was good seeing everyone, (Well quite), expecially to
hear the gossip (thanks Jen, Rachel, Ann and of course
Bingo Boy).

Special thanks to Rachel and Dave for organising the
party on Saturday night - I was touched (But that was just Conor).
Praise of course to Tom-Tom, who puts up with everyones
jokes - What a man -What a reputation.

BUT I must speak out to agree with Cormac about the
numbers of couples that the club has generated this
year - Its disgusting. One good point is at least
David is maintaining his reputation for another year !!

Anyone wanting to come over to snowy Scotland then get
in contact. Ive found some great pubs in Edinburgh and
its very close to the hills !!!!

Must go, crampons to sharpen, rucsacs to fill ...

This is my final commment for the comment page. This is the end of an era.
Now, i know that someone has the power to delete this message, but, i ask you now not to delete this comment as i promise not to ridicule anyone's good name. The sole purpose of this commment is to say Good-bye and, in a way leave a legacy.
I must say that it was fun putting up crappy commments on the comment page, Jesus, i have that poor Cormac Long tormented. I always did it for a bit of a laugh, it was funny whenever i went out walking to see every-one gossiping as to who this Batman Character is. I created so much scandal in the club it was hilarious.
I know i offended alot of people, i never ment to. I only did it for the laugh. I often crossed the line like calling Jenny the b. b. doing b. (i won't type it), or that comment bout' the photo of Kev Kelly and A.M., but now, i must say that i am sorry and that this will never happen again. I am laying down my utility belt and bidding this comment page fare-well.
I salute Cormac Long for his detemination and perserveerence (spelt right?). I drove him up the wall. But most of all i salute every body in the club, who like me, just laughed at the childishness of this Batman Character.
Alot of people will be wondering 'bout my identity. I remember saying to myself at the start that i would reveal my secret identity, but now, it is all i have left.

I am now going to say my good-bye in the good old fashioned way: Tune in tommorrow: same bat-time, same bat channel.

 Cormac,

I heard that you think Frank was Batman, well, I'm not so sure.

I remember reading some of his comments and saying, wow, "that is definately the way Diarmo speaks", or "that is definately the way Hugh speaks", I even thought that it was you for a while, or even Dave.

I heard that you traced a comment to the Boole one night when Diarmo was in Tarbert, so this might suggest that who-ever was Batman actually impersonated the way people in the club spoke so as to lead you, and everyone else, astray.

I still don't know, it is a mystery.
Mike.

Comments: Hello everybody, I had a thought - no don't be scared.

We don't live in the era of such horror films as Jaws or Cape fear or the Blob any more. In the modern world we have urban legends and I know what you did last summer. And such films as scream !!!

That's right, there's my though - why does batman have to be the one person. Cormac has traced him/her down to the Boole basement when Diarmuid - the prime suspect - was in Talbert. So it couldn't be him ... and indeed this time it wasn't.

So who could be helping Diarmuid - the caped crusader. The romantic in me, thinks it could his other half; our captain that has never written on the comment page and yet seems to know quite a bit about it; Yes I accuse you Rachel Stapelton of being the accomplise - or perhaps the mastermind ! - of the fiend that is batman.

Perhaps I am wrong - but it an interesting idea me thinks.

test piece

My trusted 'blue alien' popped last saturday, in the Burren,
Whilst I was climbing a route called pointless (E3, 5C) 35m.

In doing so I managed to create a 'zipper effect' from the ground up
thereby ripping out two more pieces of pro.

...and there I was dangling 6 feet off the ground,
by a free piece of 'bootie' that I got this summer just past.

I don't know who yous't to own that piece of gear
but I'm a happy camper that I had it in where I did :)

Rock on,

Has anyone else got any further news about Veerle
and the mystery of the Plane journey home?
Jiri seems to know something, but he won't tell
us! What of the bruises?

Next sunday, we'll be scrambling if the weather's
good, otherwise we'll just have a walk as per
usual. Details will be posted shortly!
Cormac.

Comments: Alright folks, We, the unelected organising committee for unofficial activities in the off-season, are sorting out a weekend of hiking and much merriment to Dingle, heading off on Friday 28th April, some time in the afternoon. We'll be back again on the Sunday night.I sent an email to some people yesterday about it, so this is really for the benefit of anyone who didn't get that because there's only so many addresses I have, as it were. Anyway, if you want to go, drop me a line so we can sort out numbers, because I've a place in mind that we could stay in, very cheaply, and it'll probably need to be booked soon. Anyone not going who uses exams as an excuse will be taken out and shot at dawn by firing squad on the morning of departure. The firing sqaud will then go back to bed to gather their strength for the long drive to Dingle. Also, who has a car available for that weekend?? Until the beer begins to flow on Friday then, tally ho, Jonathan.

I would strongly advise people to bring their 5 best photos to the AGM because we really do have two excellent prizes of good equipment. You have been warned. Don't tempt me about Dingle. I might just go yet!

hillwalking and mountaineering. A fine distinction there is between
the two, I had no problem discovering I do prefer a nice and relaxing

Well,
Now that I've gotten back from Texas, let me tell
you all that the climbing there is Awesome! Beautiful overhanging limestone by river beds,
sneaky step-up moves and A Hint of Snake makes
for some very amusing and interesting routes...
(and yes, I did have to come off one route because
of those bloody reptiles!)

So, anyway, the upshot of it all is that I've now
led a 5.10, and I can't wait for more of the climbing
down there - anyone who wants can catch some floor
space and some quality climbing - but you're better
off leaving such adventures for the wintertime.
In summer the rock can cause heat blisters!

Well, that's all for now folks!
Cheers,
Cormac.

Comments: I just got this piece of information and i was thinking to let ya know about its existence...LOVE YA ALL(when im in the mood of course...lol)...me again........................................... Dear climbers, You receive this mail because you made an entry in the UCC Mountaineering Club guestbook. So we where thinking you might be interested in this offer. Please delete this message if you are not interested, read on if you are. If you know people who might be interested please forward this message. ***************************** It happens each year to a lot of you; during winter and spring a lot of plans for mountaineering expeditions have been made, but in some cases it just does not turn into a real project. Alternatives at a late date have always been scarce and hard to find because with many commercial companies you have to book very early. ALPEX High Alpine Expeditions however creates it's climbing and trekking groups mostly out of individual members, which means we have to be greatly flexible in making arrangements and have to keep open our booking longer than any other company there is. For this summer and fall, you still can join in with 3 of our Central Asian mountaineering expeditions. On two expeditions trekking groups can join. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED YOU HAVE TO ACT NOW! 1. MUZTAGATA (7546m) Muztagata literally means "Father of Ice Mountains", a name that fits it well. Although this is a very large mountain, climbing it from its western side is relatively easy, and can be done also by not so good technical mountaineers. For further information take a look at: http://www.xs4all.nl/~macaspro/muztagata/ This expedition takes place from July 8 to August 1, and the costs for the expedition is 5595 Dutch guilders. This includes a flight from Schiphol Amsterdam. Costs will be less if you travel by yourself to Central Asia. But you have to be quick; bookings have to be made before June 6! To contact us send email to feedback@highalpex.com, with in the subject: Muztagata For a trekking group an interesting goal would be rounding the whole massive. This has been done only a few times. Price for this arrangement would be 4999 Dutch guilders including flight. Please respond now if you would like to join, and send an email to muztagtrek@highalpex.com. 2. KONGUR TAGH (7719m) A project for experienced climbers with sufficient technical skills. This mountain was originally climbed in 1981 by a team led by Chris Bonnington, has been tried since then, but it still awaits it's second ascent. For further information take a look at: http://www.xs4all.nl/~macaspro/kongur/ The dates are July 22 until September 5, and a complete arrangement including flights etc. would be 10.299 Dutch guilders. Again you have to hurry to book because at the latest June 15 we need to make official arrangements. 3. ULUGH MUZTAGH (6973m, Northern Tibet) A dreamed of expedition to one of the most remote mountains of this earth, only once in 1986 there has been a big state-sponsored expedition to the area in which the main of 5 peaks was climbed from the North. We will try a new route from the south side, as well as scaling Ulugh Muztagh II for the first time. On this expedition individual trekkers or groups can join. For further information take a look at: http://www.xs4all.nl/~macaspro/ulugh/ This expedition will take place from September 6 to October 17, and will cost 11.499 Dutch guilders per person for a complete arrangement. For this expedition you have a little more time: all booking and payments should be concluded by July 1. The price for trekkers is 9.999 Dutch guilders per person. You will be able to do unexplored routes, in an area where only few people have ever been before. We hope you did find this information of interest. Comments: I like the way the above expedition thingy goes on about making expedition groups out of individuals, no siamese twins then. To the Alefroid crew, I couldn't make it on the Wednesday, did I miss anything? (Was in Clare and now am at home.) Might be joining yis all in Letterfrack form here....until then my pretty ones..adieu.

Comments: I wish to state that i was in an extreme state of intoxication when this years prize winning photo was taken. I will pay substantial amounts of money to keep that photo out of the web page. I will also pay lots of money for anyone who hunts down Julian and gives him a severe beating. Now that i've got that off my chest, all the best in the summer and i'll see you next year as i'm of back home to glasgow.

Comments: Hi Everybody.
First of all I will thank you for a great year.
This year in Ireland would not have been as good without the mountaineering club. I had a lot of nice climbs, and ofcourse I met you guys.
I miss 5 photos from the photo competition on the AGM. Courtney that had them wrote me that the jury still have them. If my photos are still alive, can I have them before friday, or sent to Norway if you don't make it in time?? You can mail me on the email adress above or send them to the following address in Norway:
Jon Martin Birkeland
Femmaelen 19
5710 SKULESTADMO
NORWAY
Norway can offer lots of different mountains both for hiking and rock climbing, so if you want to come over either you want to go by yourself or you want to say hi, please contact me. I can help you to plan wherever you want to go.
For those who are going on the captains weekend and/or to the alps: have a great climb, and for all of you: have a great summer.
Jon Martin

Comments: Hi all, Who said the weather matters?, what a fantastic week end !!!! I want to say thanks to everyone for that great time, too. When a "back markers" week end? Any excuse to go away, Cork is nice , but away is much better. To the people in holidays: enjoy yourselves, life is beautiful (and as John Healy says : "the alternative isn't very good"). To the people working: take it easy and enjoy yourselves as well. See you soon!
