Quite a lot happens in a club like this. People attack buses, groups get lost
take scenic routes, cars crash into the boot while everyone's changing... you get the drift.
Occasionally we even have fun! As a result, many PROs go on mad power trips and do write ups
of these events. These take pride of place for as long as they've got control of the site, and
then they get bunged up here. So if you want to find out what happened to
the freshers in '98, what people
used talk about on the old comment page, which peaks people scaled in the Alps, or just get
a quick history lesson from Cormac, here's your place.
Here are some things you might need to print out fairly often for use on the Hikes at the weekend etc, so they're up the top.
Sign-in Sheet (MS Excel 36kB)
Everyone attending a Sunday hike and travelling by Bus must sign in on this sheet. It also includes a brief disclaimer (small print!) and now even has numbers (wow!) so you don't have to spend ages finding out that Mattias is actually not two people.
Route Card (PDF 59kB)
Version 1.32
The designated leader(s) and backmarker should fill out this route card in advance of all hikes. This card must be used in accordance with the UCCMC Safety Statement, and a copy should be provided to the Bus driver and/or other relevant parties. This route card will basically let you plan your route, fill in details of all waypoints, and details of the group you're leading or back marking for.
Printable Gear List (PDF 67kB)
Primarily for the benefit of new members, this checklist is quite useful to print out & stick up on your wall. That way, on Sunday mornings when you can barely tell which direction is "up", you'll have no problems sorting out your backpack for the hike.
Lauragh 2000
For the 2000 season, the Fresher's Weekend was held in Lauragh, in West Cork. Much alcohol
was consumed, so much so that several people thought they could light their burps. After an
hour of trying they were still convinced too. We also got some salsa dancing going, and managed
to cram in a bit of mountaineering in our spare time. It rained of course (it always
rained) and innocent young men got molested on the dancefloor at the Sibín, but we still
had a laugh.
The French Alps 2000
The Mountaineering Council of Ireland arranged a meet in the Ailefroide, a small village
in the French Alps, for all the clubs in Ireland. The event was aimed at youth clubs
in particular and was pretty fantastic till the gay flu went around. Despite vague and unsettling
threats by the girls that "what happens in Ailefroide stays in Ailefroide",
Conor did a writeup all the same, mighty man that he is, and you can read it here.
The Fresher's Weekend '98
This was one of the pages Harry contributed to the club, after he'd done them for a college
project. Here in all it's original glory, is the illustrated copy of the Epic Of
Glanmore, when four people, drunk on adrenaline, and various other substances, decided they
could do the Glanmore horseshoe in a day. Coming down the Healy Pass in the pitch black
night is apparently quite an experience.
The Club Constitution
If you read this, you really need to get out more. Unless you're a law student that is,
I hear the sun isn't too friendly to your kind. Might want to lay off the garlic too. Anyway,
this basically lays down the rules on how the club, and in particular the committee, should go
about their business. This has been getting ammended at the last two AGMs, so if you've got
an issue you'd like to raise at a meeting, have a gander at this first.
Club Safety Statement (PDF 103kB)
This guide is designed to prevent, rather than deal with, hazardous situations and
accidents. It is intended to be a living document to be added to or modified to reflect
the changing requirements of UCCMC and current best practice in First Aid and
Safety. Its purpose is not to hinder someone from participating in the activities we
promote but to ensure that they may enjoy the activity safely.
How Votes are Counted at Club Meetings
This long, long document explains exactly how the votes are counted at general meetings
of the club, and gives general guidelines on how things are to be run. It's mainly for
the benefit of each year's Returning Officers who have to figure out the whole thing in
the run-up to the AGM and so on.
Club History 98
This was all before my time, when Cormac Long was kicking off the first club web-page. It
gives a pretty good run-down of the club and then launches into what happened way back in
the distant annals of time - the late ninties. Remember them? It was a time of great irony,
the Verve ruled the world, Oasis had suddenly become deeply sad, and I was confronting my
Leaving Cert. Ah, those were the days...
Daryl's Manifesto
This is Daryl's attempt to create a code of ethics for people who go mountaineering, be
it hillwalking, scrambling or climbing. It's not the official set of club rules
(that's the constition), however most people would agree with the basic ethos, that you
respect the land and property, and try to leave them in such a way that other mountaineers
can gain as much pleasure from them as you.
The Country Code
Along the same lines as "the manifesto" but more official, the Country Code is a set of general principles on how best to respect the countryside we pass through when we hike. Part of the club's duty is to promote it, so finally, here it is in 2006.
The Comment Page Archives #4
The Revenge Of the Nerds! Yes indeedy, people plunged new lows here, sticking up output
from bits of new message boards, mucking about with the indentation to see how far they
could screw things up and discussing the Nice treaty of all things. It was looking bad, but
then Mike came and saved it all with a link to some free porn. Nice one!!!
The Comment Page Archives #3
The third batch starts in August, but there's a four week gap missing where Conor had to remove
pages due to the actions of someone outside the club. The big talking point was why was no-one
posting to the comment page. Aside from that there were the Slovenian Snowboarders, a break-away
group who felt that dodging mines going down a snow slope that glowed green at night while being
targetted by NATO was preferable to a quiet time drinking tea in Conemara. They came back talking
about "hardbodies" but we never found out why as the girls went mental whenever someone
mentioned it.
The Comment Page Archives #2
This second batch started after the Captain's Weekend in Conemara, as evidenced by the excessive
and uncalled usage of surfer speak by the easily influenced members of the club. About this time
Torken Faddy and Sike Rosenpower made their entrance. There's also a few mentions of the babeque
at Tom's, my conquest over stats and most importantly of all, the foundation of the NACCer's.
The Comment Page Archives #1
Just in case my message board every does a wobbly and dies, here's an archive of the early
comment page posts. This first batch lasts from the 13th of December 1999 to the 13th
of June 2000 - around the time of the Captain's Weekend.
Here you'll find Dave's great first message to the masses, some traces of the early "Batman"
scandal, and some even fainter traces of the greatest piece of ska to ever set alight the dirty
little minds of the club - the "trousers issue".
The Credits
Right at the end, as they always are. Here are the people who made the page what it is today.
