Sunday 14th February Hags Glen 8.30 amThis week it's the The Hags Glen. This hike climbs Carrauntoohill and is a relatively long hike with lots of height gain, be warned. That said it's a great hike. As usual the Bus leaves from Gaol Cross at 8.30 am sharp. Remember no runners or jeans on the hike. See below for more information. |
Hikes take place every Sunday during term time! Everyone is welcome, all you have to do is turn up at Gaol Cross by 8:30 AM,that's the one at the first set of traffic lights on the Western Road before you get to the Western Star, outbound. A reasonable level of fitness is required as the days can be long and strenuous even if they are also great fun! The bus now costs a recession-busting €7.00 if you can have the exact money that would help. Please wear a pair of boots and bring a rain jacket.
We must insist that you not wear jeans or runners/trainers/sneakers as these are unsuitable for Irish mountainous terrain which generally lack any kind of trail to follow. Bring a packed lunch and a change of clothes and shoes, which you can leave on the bus.
We'll stop on the way down for last-minute supplies, and breakfast, and on the way back for food and a trip to the pub. Remember to bring a full change of shoes and clothes for the journey back! We should be back in Cork by about 8pm or 9pm that evening.
We're trying to build up the photo gallery for this year, so if you have taken any pictures we'd love for you to add them to the site! You can register as a user and add them yourself or you can email them into the club and we'll add them for you. You can easily add them if they're on Flickr, Facebook or Bebo too, so send them in!
Here is a printable gear list that you'll find useful if you want to check that you've got everything you'll need before leaving home on Sunday. Please take into account that this list is meant to be exhaustive and therefore more than half of it doesn't apply to new climbers! Make your decision what you need and what you don't, but consider that Ireland is a very boggy place to hike, regardless of the weather. You will get wet and it might be freezing, so make sure to bring extra layers and waterproofs!
This is a new version of the UCCMC's website, which has been unveiled for the 2008/09 season. It's structured as a wiki, which means that anyone in the club can edit and easily contribute to the site. Please read the editing guidelines before you start! If you'd like to edit pages and contribute, click “login” at the bottom of the page, and register as a user. It only takes a minute!

If you really want to access the old website, you can get to it by visiting:

Please help the wiki by creating new pages and copying over the old data - this will take some time, there's a lot to do!
After the recent flooding the Climbing Wall and the Mardyke Arena in general are out of action until early in the New Year at the earliest. More information is available at www.mardykearena.com. They have set 15th February as the expected date for reopening.
The Mountaineering Club has a very active social life which centres around are weekly trip to Tom Barry's on Barracks Street every Wednesday night. You'll always find someone from the club up there from about 10.30 onwards and traditionally all those who have been climbing down at the wall make the trip up to the pub afterwards. We always love to see new faces so if you have any questions about the club or simply want to come along for a pint you're more than welcome.
