CIT beat Trinity College Dublin in the first semi final by 8 points, assisted by Colin O'Reilly with 61 points. UCC Men faced a strong University of Ulster Jordanstown side. UCC travelled with a depleted side, with four of the usual starters unable to play. But a huge credit is due to the players that did travel, they put in a huge effort against a very big and physical Jordansown side. UCC started the better with full-court defense on UUJ, forcing them to make mistakes and turn the ball over. UCC were led in the first quarter by strong play from captain Will O'Sullivan with 6 points. UCC led 16-15 at the end of the first period. But UCC collapsed in the second quarter, with UUJ finding ways to beat the UCC defense. UCC just could not get their shots to drop and were outscored in the quarter by 22 points to 8. At the half time break UUJ led by 37 points to 24. UCC looked in serious trouble. But a switch to man-to-man defense seemed to expose UUJ offensive weaknesses. UCC's Shane O'Connell applied some serious pressure UUJ's point guard Gareth Devlin, stealing the ball from him on numerous occasions and making easy lay-ups at the other end. O'Connell had 15 points by the end of the 3rd and UCC had taken back the lead, 51-49. UCC held off Jordanstown in the last quarter with some strong play from David Murphy, Brian Cummins and Andrew Burkett as well as some great scoring from captain Will O'Sullivan and Shane O'Connell. UCC had stretched their lead to 5 points with 34 seconds left to play. But Connor O'Dornan of Jordanstown came down the floor and hit a massive 3-pointer to cut the lead to two points with 16 seconds left. UCC put the ball in the hands of Shane O'Connell once again, who was fouled by Alex Salvatelli of UUJ. O'Connell went to the free throw line and made his two free throws under severe pressure. Jordanstown could not score on the other end and UCC ran out winners 68 to 64. Top Scorers: UCC - Shane O'Connell, 21 points; Will O'Sullivan 18 points, David Murphy and Brian Cummins 12 each. UUJ - Alex Salvatelli 12 points, Damien Galagher 11.

UL's strength and depth outlasted UCC in this fast paced final to come out 63-51 victors in the end. View the Championship Draw here Intervarsities - 04/03/2005 to 07/03/2005 UCC made a galant bid at the Intervarsities this weekend. The Senior Women's Team lost in the final against UL and the Senior Men lost in their quarter final against Trinity College Dublin. UCC women were impressive throughout the tournament, and had two players on the Intervarsties All-Star Team in Donna Buckley and Marie Breen. They were unlucky in the final against UL, staging a great comeback from over 15 points down, but were pipped at the post by UL. UCC Men almost staged the comeback of the tournament against TCD in the quarter final. UCC felt the effects of a tough group game against UL the day before and played very poorly throughout the match. TCD were 25 points up with 7 minutes to play, and it looked over. But TCD were held scoreless against a UCC press for the rest of the match and some great fast break basketball helped UCC reduce the deficit to 3, but they ran out of time in the end. Trinity went on to play in the Men's final against a very strong Queen's University Belfast side. Queen's proved too good for TCD and ran out winners. The game remained tight for the first few minutes, going pretty much point for point, but then the UCC came into there own, taking advantage of the massive height advantage inside with Marie Breen and Tascha Muesch. Shortly into the first quarter DCU found themselves in foul trouble and were unlucky with a lot of their shots. UCC capitalised on this with their rebounding prowess inside. At the end of the first quarter UCC had a comfortable lead but DCU were still very much in contention and still fighting hard, but unable to contain UCC inside and outside threats, with some great outside shooting from Donna Buckley, Carol Anne O'Donovan and Clodagh Walsh. At half time ucc were up 44 - 27 but still had to work hard to keep their lead because of a late DCU rally. But a fantastic defensive display from the UCC girls in the second half saw DCU only manage to score 18 points. UCC ran out comprehensive victors, with a scoreline of 75 - 45 Captain Liz Kelleher was elated after the game, "Players of the match for me were Marie Breen in the post who had one of her best college games this season, tearing them apart inside. It was a great display of basketball, proving shes worth every penny of her scholarship. "Donna Buckley on the point showed great control of the game with some very intelligent passing and some fantastic outside shooting. Tascha Muesch was solid on the boards, battling hard for every ball and cleaning up inside. "All the rest of the girls on the team had a solid and consistent game, with everyone chalking up some points on the scoreboard," she added. "It was a great display from the girls on how to play basketball as a team. They finished the game in style, with a great win, and growing confidence heading to the varsities this weekend!"
