Sports Scholarships

History of Sports Scholarship Scheme & Details

In pursuit of its function of promoting excellence amongst its students University College Cork introduced a Sports Bursary Scheme in October 1992 when sixteen Awards were made for various sports. While UCC has always enjoyed a reputation for success at sport this scheme played a significant part in ensuring that UCC retained this reputation. An unprecedented series of successes of clubs and individuals during the 1996/96 session encouraged a raising of the status of the awards from Sports Bursaries to Sports Scholarships. Since 1992, 160 different students have benefited from what is now an annual investment of €80,000 partially funded by those listed below to whom the College extends its grateful thanks.

The positive effects of the Sports Scholarships Scheme

• Awardees are encouraged to acquire increased levels of fitness and skill, so becoming better players/performers.
• The club of which an awardee is a member benefits with fellow-club members motivated to acquire similar standards of fitness/performance.
• The improved performance of College teams and individuals especially on representative teams have continued to contribute positively to the reputation of UCC.
