The aim of the Sport and Recreation Programme is to provide all students with opportunities to participate in some form of sport or recreation. Students at University should seek time for relaxation as well as study, since taking part in regular exercise improves a student's capacity to work and play while it also presents opportunities for making new friends. To this end provision is made both for male and female students in a wide range of sporting and recreational activities. Fifty two sports clubs guarantee that those seeking sporting excellence are afforded every opportunity to foster their competitive drives, while the recreational activities programme cater for those who enjoy physical activity but may not wish to attain high levels of skill or fitness.
The facilities at The Mardyke Arena enable the College to cater for all indoor sports while a total of 72 acres of playing fields (including a synthetic athletics track and synthetic grass pitch) at two sites ensures that the College maintains its exceptional record in all outdoor team games. Arrangements with private companies for equestrian, sailing and tennis enhance the sport and recreation service.
