MA IN GERONTOLOGY The MA in
Gerontology is a two-year part-time programme the aim of which is to provide a knowledge of older adults and develop a critical appraisal of the various models and approaches to ageing. The programme has two
interconnected objectives. Firstly it promotes an understanding of old age through examining the psychological, social, educational, health and caring dimensions of the ageing process among older adults.
Gerontology provides the intellectual core of the course unpacking the relationship between health, ageing, science, public and social policy. Secondly the programme explores the developmental model of ageing and
the issue of empowerment/animation. The importance of the latter is highlighted by extended life expectancy. The role of intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, community, culture and leisure contexts will be explored.
Programme Outline The course will be of two years duration and run on a two year
cycle. The classes are held on Wednesday (2.00 – 9.00 p.m.). The programme provides a theoretical basis for the understanding of old age from a multi-disciplinary perspective, a critical appraisal of the various models
