Information Session on the GALILEO Masters Competition Call for Ideas |

The National Space Centre is sponsoring the first ever Ireland Region prize in the prestigious Galileo Masters European Satellite Navigation IDEAS Competition, established in 2004 and now with an overall prize fund worth in the region of €1 million.
The competition is backed by the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA). The session will appeal to anyone interested in submitting an idea to the competition.
Presenter: Aisling Walsh (National Contact Point for the GALILEO Masters European Satellite Navigation Competition)
The session will provide an overview of the competition including a fast track Guide to Applying, and information on the Special Prizes available.
GALILEO Masters Competition, CALL FOR IDEAS
- FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, in the GALILEO Masters European Satellite Navigation Competition (est. 2004), Ireland will have a Regional Prize, sponsored by National Space Centre.
- THE WINNER will be awarded a development package, and will go forward as Ireland’s representative to compete in the International Competition Final for a chance to win the title of Galileo Master.
- ONE MILLION EURO PRIZE FUND, is up for grabs including a special University Challenge Prize

The European Commission (Research & Innovation DG - Directorate Environment) is organising an InfoDay on FP7 Environment Research on 11 June at the Albert Borschette Conference Centre, Rue Froissart 36, Brussels. The event aims to highlight the novelties of the 2013 Work Programme due to be published in July. It will provide guidance on the preparation and submission of proposals.
Attendance is free but participants are required to register prior to the event.

FP7 Space: International Information Event on 2013 Call |
Date: 20-21 June 2012
Location: University of Surrey
COSMOS, the EU Space National Contact Point (NCP) network, will host the International Information event on the 2013 FP7 Space Call. This event will take place on 20 and 21 June at the University of Surrey.
Participants will be provided with:
- first-hand information on the Call content and on future EU Space funding under Horizon 2020;
- pre-organised as well as spontaneous matchmaking opportunities via face-to-face meetings;
- short presentations on project ideas and the competencies of potential partners;
- profile poster session; and
- spontaneous networking opportunities in a relaxed environment.
It is expected that potential applicants from all over Europe will attend this event.
Researchers interested in attending this event are required to register and submit their ‘co-operation profile’ before 10 June.

FP7 Public Private Partnerships: Information Day on 2013 Calls for Energy Efficient Buildings, Factories of the Future and Green Cars PPPs |

The European Commission is holding an information and brokerage event on the next (and final) FP7 calls for the Energy Efficient Buildings (EeB), Factories of the Future (FoF) and Green Cars Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). The events will take place on the 9-10 July 2012 in Brussels. The agenda includes roundtable discussions on future outlook of these three PPPs under Horizon 2020, the next research and innovation programme which will run from 2014-2020.

Information Day and Brokerage Event on Call FP7-KBBE-2013-7 |

The European Commission is organising an Information Day and Brokerage Event on the 2013 KBBE call
The event is for everyone interested in taking part in call 2013 of FP7 Cooperation Theme 2: KBBE call.
The objective is to bring together
research stakeholders, from both the public and private sectors from the EU and
Third Countries, together with Commission officers and provide information and
ground for discussion and networking.
The morning session will consist of presentations on the topics in the 2013 call, divided into the three "activity areas" of the KBBE theme. The afternoon will consist of parallel sessions with group discussions by thematic areas, in order to help bring together consortia, and pre-arranged face-to-face meetings to discuss potential partnerships for proposals. Participants can sign up for both when registering for the Information Day. There will also be a focus on opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the 2013 KBBE call, which is foreseen to be a particular priority.
Participation is free-of-charge, but registration is compulsory.

FP7 ICT: Proposers Day on 2013 Call |

The European Commission, in collaboration with the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Polish National Contact Point, is organising the ICT Proposers' Day 2012, which will be held in Warsaw on 26 and 27 September 2012.
This two day event is a unique networking opportunity to build quality partnerships for participating in the new Information and Communication Technologies Work Programme for 2013 and it will provide:
- first-hand information from European Commission officials on the new ICT Work Programme 2013, offering around 1.5 billion euro of EU funding
- answers to questions related to the upcoming calls for proposals
- an opportunity to present and discuss your project idea during one of the networking sessions
- a platform for exchanging ideas and finding right partners to form project consortia
- guidance on how to present a successful proposal
The event will be free of charge, but attendees must register in advance. Online networking and registration will open at the end of June.

| 01.03.2012 | LAUNCH OF RESEARCH PRIORITISATION REPORT |
The Report of the Research Prioritisation Steering Group was published today and outlines the Government’s plan to target the majority of the Government’s core €500million annual scientific research budget on areas with the greatest potential for economic return.
The Government also announced the establishment of a Prioritisation Action Group, which will oversee implementation of the recommendations of the report.

The Fulbright Programme provides funding for post-graduate study, research or lecturing in the USA.
In addition, funding is also available to bring US students and academics to Ireland, providing an excellent opportunity to develop new collaborations and gain the benefit of hosting top US researchers in UCC.
The awards are open to postgraduate students, post-doctoral researchers and academics across ALL DISCIPLINES.

Financial returns from Ireland’s expenditure in research have outstripped the original investment, according to a recent study. It claims that while the Exchequer put in almost €1.2 billion over the period 2000-2006 the returns amounted to about €1.8 billion.

Private sector spending on R&D in Ireland reached €1.9bn in 2009, according
to recent figures released by the CSO and Forfas. Estimates for 2010 indicate a
slight decline in expenditure to about €1.8bn. However, spending by indigenous
Irish companies on R&D increased from €563 million in 2009 to a likely total

Irish companies are maintaining a good record on innovation despite weaknesses in key areas such as the availability of investment funding, according to a report by the government advisory body Forfas. The “Analysis of Ireland’s innovation performance”, was published on 23 March.

José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission’s president, wants universities to play a part in helping Europe exit the financial crisis. Speaking recently at the European University Association’s annual conference in Denmark, Barroso said: “The structures are in place, the plans are almost ready. Now it is time to move to the implementation phase. And universities can play a key role in this.”
