Accurate attribution has always been a challenge in the scholarly sphere. Thomson Reuters has long known this, hence the creation of ResearcherID and founding membership in the ORCID initiative, a universal author ID that is integrated across the Thomson Reuters suite of products.

Annual Consultancy declaration for Academic Staff (proposed go live early 2013)
The development of a web-based Consultancy Declaration process, hosted by IRIS, is underway and is expected to be available shortly. Users will be able to submit a return for any external consultancy or other remunerated activity undertaken during the academic year in one quick, easy and simple step to the Research office via IRIS.

UCC Research Support Services are pleased to announce the integration of IRIS with Agresso. Using a feed from the Agresso system, this enhancement facilitates the transfer of research grant information to the IRIS profile of the Lead Investigator.

As previously announced, IRIS Proposals, an online application that allows users to record, manage and track internal approval for their research funding proposals, is now available to users
Paper Appendix A documents will no longer be accepted by the Research Office from 1st November 2012. After this time, all new funding proposals must be completed via IRIS.

The biggest single stumbling-block in the way to reliable citation is the identity of the authors: is that Smith, J over there the same one as that James Q Smith over here? There have been proprietary attempts to rationalise this before. but they have foundered on their restrictions.
A new project called ORCID is now trying to make a global unique identifier for authors, like the ISBN is for books and the DOI is for articles. UCC is a member of the project and we are monitoring developments so that we don't get left behind

| 19.07.2012 | Wellcome Trust Strengthens its open access Policy |
Mark Walport, Director of the Wellcome Trust has
recently notified UCC that the Wellcome Trust will be enforcing compliance with
their open access policy from 28 July 2012 onwards. This grant condition
requires that peer-reviewed original research papers funded in whole or in part
by the Wellcome Trust ‘must be made available through UK Pub Med Central or
PubMed Central repositories within 6 months of publication’. The Wellcome Trust
is committed to open access to ensure that the results of research they have
funded is freely available and ‘can be built on and used in a manner that
maximises health and public benefit.’
For future publications, if you upload the accepted version of your paper to
CORA, UCC's Institutional repository through your IRIS profile, UCC Library
staff will ensure that it complies with the Wellcome Trust open access policy.
