The Northside Folklore Project

Photographic Collections
Our online archive contains an extensive photographic collection of over 6000 images, exploring the breadth of life in an ever changing Cork. Two major collections are available to browse or search by topic on our Research page. The Hunter/Hudson collection focuses on the physical evolution of Cork over the last ten years. Our major Cork 2005, European Capital of Culture project features the stunning images of photographer Fawn Allen. From the physical environment to the faces of Cork’s latest citizens, there’s plenty to see.

Print Publications
Since our beginnings in 1996 we have published eleven issues of our annual journal, The Archive, all available on our publications page for your reading pleasure. Articles are contributed by both NFP staff and community members, offering a wide diversity of subjects, and capturing Cork both past and present. Also featured on this page are our two books, Life Journeys and the more recent ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ This fascinating book is based on the interviews conducted for our Cork 2005 project and is a companion piece to the radio series of the same name on our Cork 2005 page.

Visual Recordings
On our Video page you can sample the archive film collection with excerpts from source recordings, as well as watch two complete films. The award winning A Night at Bingo explores the culture of bingo from a very personal angle. This entertaining short film has been shown on television, at film festivals and used widely in the teaching of oral history and folklore. Also available here is the film Sunbeam, made in conjunction with Frameworks Films, about the iconic Northside Cork landmark, the Sunbeam Wolsey textile mill of Blackpool.

Sound Recordings
On our Cork 2005 page you can listen to over 200 sound excerpts and read their transcriptions simultaneously. More than forty interviews with Corkonians both old and new, were the core of our City of Culture project and the basis for the fascinating radio series, ‘How’s it goin’, boy?’ These excerpts offer an intimate depiction of Cork city through the words of its inhabitants, reflecting the variety of backgrounds, experiences and stories that make up the everyday life of the city today.
