Why is there a need for protection?

The Bantry Bay coastal zone is rich in resources. If the communities and economy of the area are to be sustained successfully into the future, then the distinctive resources and character of the area need to be nurtured and protected, as well as valued for their own sake. These resources are inherited from previous generations that have influenced the natural and the built environment, and present day society. How we use and safeguard this heritage will in turn affect what is passed on to future generations. The various economic activities that are carried out in the area (see Production, p. ??) all rely on the use of local resources. In turn, these activities have a range of impacts on these resources and those involved are clearly concerned that the resources are managed and maintained. Everybody involved in these activities are themselves part of the management of both the resources that they use directly, and those that they influence indirectly
