The germ-free unit contributes to the elucidation, in vivo, of the molecular signals which condition and prime the host immune response, digestive and other systems, as well as the assessment of the effect of specific microbial pathogens on the gut microbiota and host response and the development and assessment of probiotic therapies for gastrointestinal diseases.
