John graduated with a B.Sc. Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from NUI Galway. His research career has been spent at the University of Melbourne, Australia, the University of Pennsylvannia, Philadelphia, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California followed by 4 years as a group Leader at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Basel, Switzerland before returning to Ireland to take up a joint post between the School of Pharmacy and the Dept. Pharmacology & Therapeutics as a Senior Lecturer. John is now Professor of Anatomy at UCC. He is a Principal Investigator in the Neurogastroenterology Core with an interest in understanding the interaction between the brain and gut and how it applies to stress and immune-related disorders, ranging from Irritable Bowel Syndrome to sepsis.
