Alleson Dobson & Fergus Shanahan

APC 2009 Awards

Alleson Dobson received the APC PhD Scholar Award. She received a laptop and travel award.

The APC Scientist of the Year Award was presented jointly to Dr Marcus Claesson and Dr Paul Cotter.

The APC Person of the Year went to Professor Liam Donnelly.

Science for All 2010 postgraduate presentation competition

Science for All aims to encourage young scientists to communicate their research to a lay audience in an easily understandable manner. The competition is now part of a NEW Postgraduate Module in Science Communication and Outreach PG6014.

Science Raps Challenge 2009 Winners
Science Raps Challenge is a new APC competition aimed at encouraging young people to express their thoughts about science and technology through rap music. To enter the competition students were invited to compose and video a rap on this year’s Science Week theme: “Celebrating Creativity and Innovation”.  The winners were announced at the Opening of Discovery 2009 in the City Hall, Cork. more

Minister Lenihan identifies Alimentary Pharmabiotic
Centre as playing key role in the Smart Economy

“The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre at University College Cork and Teagasc is playing a very important role in exploring commercial opportunities in both the pharma and food sectors here, and this emerging area offers enormous possibilities in the future for Ireland.” Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Conor Lenihan T.D. said today (11th September, 2009).
Minister Lenihan was speaking during a visit to University College Cork (UCC) where he launched Phase 2 of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), a gastrointestinal health research centre and partnership involving UCC, Teagasc and industry partners, Alimentary Health Limited and GlaxoSmithKline. more

Teagasc Appoints Prof. Paul Ross as New Head of Food Research

Paul Ross Appointed Head of Food Research at Teagasc

APC Principal Investigator Professor Paul Ross has been appointed as Head of Food Research at Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority.  Professor Ross has responsibility for providing overall leadership for the Teagasc food research and innovation programme which is delivered at the two research centres - Moorepark in Cork and Ashtown in Dublin. The food research programme has a budget of €18 million and is designed to meet the research and innovation needs of the Irish food industry. more

An APC one day event, ‘Entrepreneurship - How to create a technology start-up’, was held in Devere Hall, University College Cork, on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009. Chris Horn, founder of Iona Technologies, gave a keynote address on Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Cormac Kilty, founder of Biotrin, presented on the 4 pillars to success – Technology, Market, Team and Finance.  Click here for presentations from the event

Chinese Government Awards for UCC Postgraduate Students
  • Congratulations to APC researcher, Ms. Fang Fang (pictured left), was has won a prestigious award from the Chinese Government for being an outstanding PhD student.  More
  • Congratulations to Professor Colin Hill on his recent election to the Royal Irish Academy, the highest honour available to a scholar or scientist working on the island of Ireland. More

Recent Conferring's

On Friday, March 27th, 2009, Dr Catherine Stanton and her husband, Professor Paul Ross, became the first ever couple to be conferred simultaneously with a Doctorate of Science (DSc) from the National University of Ireland (NUI).  The DSc is the highest academic honour awarded by the NUI and is based on consistent excellence in scientific research in a specific area.  Dr Stanton and Professor Ross are based at the Teagasc Food Research Centre in Moorepark, Fermoy and are Principal Investigators in the APC and in the Food for Health Research Centre (FHI).    More

At the same Spring Conferring's Ceremony at UCC were APC scientists Dr Evelyn Clayton and Dr Ian Monk, who were both conferred with PhD degrees, and Ms. Breda Kearney, who was conferred with an MSc.  Congratulations to all on their achievements!

 

Congratulations to Ms. Julie O’Donovan from the Department of Mathematics, UCC, winner of the ScienceSpeak Intervarsity Competition, 2009!  Julie, who is supervised by Dr Tom Carroll, presented the topic “Collections of spherical obstacles that Brownian motion can avoid ”. This is the second consecutive year that a UCC student has won this competition. More
