NORTH SOUTH - North/South Co-operation in Further and Higher Education

Work on three initial projects which the Standing Conference for North/South Co-operation in Further and Higher Education initiated - training of Personal Tutors, Training of students in skills of community leadership and Exhortation to third Level Institutions to formulate policies for Promoting Diversity - has been ongoing since its inception and all have proved valuable in promoting co-operation and understanding of Higher education issues throughout the island of Ireland. Further to these initial projects and the organisation of a major conference in Malahide in 1998 the steering committee have been involved in the organisation and facilitation of a workshop at the UCAS conference at the RDS in October 1999, Access and Progression in Higher Education. This workshop explored issues of credit accumulation and transfer. Further co-operation with UCAS is ongoing regarding a further conference to be held in Belfast this year. The work of the Standing Conference continues in documenting and supporting co-operation initiatives and partnerships among higher level institutions in the North and South, the facilitation of workshops, the initiation of new partnerships and the continuation of existing ones. Further details on the work of the North/South Co-operation in Further and Higher Education, as well as full conference proceedings and project reports may now be accessed at the North/South website: www.north-south.org
