The National Network of College Equality Representatives' meeting last September was addressed by Carol Ann Edwards and Brian Merriman, legal Advisors to the Equality Authority. Carol Ann gave a presentation on the main points of the Employment Equality Act (1998) and the Equal Status Act (2000) which prohibit discrimination and promote equality of opportunity, and Brian facilitated the subsequent discussion session. The March 2001 will focus on Bullying and will be facilitated by Patricia Murray of the health & Safety Authority and member of the Task Force on Bullying established by Tom Kitt, Minister for Labour Affairs. Later this year the HEEU plans to host a meeting to discuss the development of an integrated research strategy in the area of mature students. Access officers, National Network representatives and others with an interest in mature students in higher education will investigate what research is planned or being carried out in their institutions and discuss ways of developing a nationwide research framework with a view to improving access for mature students.
