Module Objective: To teach basic grammar and translation skills in Latin.

Module Content: Basic Latin grammar.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Recognize and classify the principal elements of Latin grammar, including phonology, morphology and syntax
· Demonstrate knowledge of basic Latin vocabulary
· Read and translate adapted passages of Latin prose with the aid of a dictionary.
· Understand and illustrate influence of Latin on English and other modern languages.

Assessment: Total Marks 300: End of Year Written Examination 150 marks; Continuous Assessment 150 marks (4 In-Class Tests, 30 marks each and Class work 30 marks).

Compulsory Elements: End of Year Written Examination; Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): None.

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40%.

End of Year Written Examination Profile: 1 x 3 hr(s) paper(s).

LT2009 Reading Latin

Module Objective: To complete the study of Latin morphology and syntax.

Module Content: Reading Latin, Section 5 and 6.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Classify and identify the principal elements of the morphology of Latin.
· Identify and describe the main constructions of Latin.
· Combine the above elements in order to translate sentences from Latin into English.
· Analyse the structure of, and translate, sentences and continuous passages from Latin into English.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: Continuous Assessment 100 marks.

Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 5% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40%.

End of Year Written Examination Profile: No End of Year Written Examination.

Requirements for Supplemental Examination: Marks in passed element(s) of Continuous Assessment are carried forward, Failed element(s) of Continuous Assessment must be repeated (Students who have failed or not written the Continuous Assessment must submit a new piece of work by the 2nd week of August, as prescribed by the Department).

Module Objective: To continue revision of aspects of Latin grammar.

Module Content: Prose composition from English into Latin.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Identify the correct Latin syntactical constructions to be used in any particular sentence (Indirect Command, Gerundive, Predicative Dative, Indirect Question, Relative with Subjunctive, Fearing, Doubt, Causal Clauses, Conditional Sentences, Concessive Clauses, Comparative Clauses, Oratio Obliqua)
· Translate accurately from English into Latin simple sentences containing the above constructions
· Translate into Latin extended passages of English retranslated from the original Latin
· Compare their own versions with the original Latin and identify its rhetorical and stylistic traits.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: End of Year Written Examination 100 marks.

Module Objective: To help students to develop powers of critical evaluation and an awareness of the distinctive qualities of Roman lyric and elegiac poetry.

Module Content: Study of selected poems of Latin lyric and elegiac poets.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Identify the major poets writing in these genres and describe their work.
· Interpret the poems in the light of their social and historical background.
· Read and translate unseen passages from the major poets of this genre with the help of a dictionary.
· Assess the contributions made by individual poets to the development of the genre as a whole.
· Scan lines of Latin poetry composed in lyric and elegiac metres.
· Synthesise material from lectures and recommended reading for use in oral and written discussion of set topics.
