Module Objective: To teach basic grammar and translation skills in Latin.

Module Content: Basic Latin grammar.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Recognize and classify the principal elements of Latin grammar, including phonology, morphology and syntax
· Demonstrate knowledge of basic Latin vocabulary
· Read and translate adapted passages of Latin prose with the aid of a dictionary.
· Understand and illustrate influence of Latin on English and other modern languages.

Assessment: Total Marks 300: End of Year Written Examination 150 marks; Continuous Assessment 150 marks (4 In-Class Tests, 30 marks each and Class work 30 marks).

Compulsory Elements: End of Year Written Examination; Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): None.

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40%.

End of Year Written Examination Profile: 1 x 3 hr(s) paper(s).

Requirements for Supplemental Examination: 1 x 3 hr(s) paper(s) to be taken in Autumn 2013. Module Objective: To complete the study of Latin morphology and syntax.

Module Content: Reading Latin, Section 5 and 6.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Classify and identify the principal elements of the morphology of Latin.
· Identify and describe the main constructions of Latin.
· Combine the above elements in order to translate sentences from Latin into English.
· Analyse the structure of, and translate, sentences and continuous passages from Latin into English.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: Continuous Assessment 100 marks.

Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 5% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.

· Assess the accuracy, credibility and objectivity of Julius Caesar as a historian.
· Read and translate unseen passages from Julius Caesar with the help of a dictionary.

· Assess the accuracy, credibility and objectivity of Tacitus.
· Read and translate unseen passages from Tacitus with the help of a dictionary.

Module Objective: To develop a greater knowledge of Latin language, particularly with regard to word order, sentence structure and rhetorical devices.

Module Content: Translation and stylistic analysis of a selection of Latin prose writers, illustrating a range of different styles.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Characterise and identify a selection of distinct Latin prose styles.
· Analyse Latin word order from both a pragmatic and stylistic perspective.
· Identify, analyse and translate idiomatic connective and consecutive phrases.
· Classify and identify the principal forms of periodic sentence.
· Analyse the structure of, and translate, sentences and continuous passages of Latin prose.
· Assess the relationship between style and meaning in continuous passages of Latin prose.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: Continuous Assessment 100 marks (end of term class test, 80 marks; 1 x 1,500 word essay, 20 marks.).

Module Objective: To develop a greater knowledge of Latin through translation of a text selected in consultation with the course lecturer.

Module Content: Instruction as to approaches to translation followed by weekly supervision of a translation into English of a Latin text selected in consultation with the course lecturer.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Translate an extended portion of unadapted Latin text.
· Assess the stylistic features of the selected text.
· Identify contemporary features of genre, language and style in Latin text.
· Understand and employ theoretically informed approaches to translation.
