Module Objective: To teach basic grammar and translation skills in Greek.

Module Content: Basic Greek grammar

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Recognise and classify the principal elements of Ancient Greek grammar and syntax.
· Demonstrate knowledge of basic Greek vocabulary.
· Read and translate a wide range of adapted Greek texts with the aid of a dictionary.
· Understand and illustrate the influence of Greek on English and other modern languages.

Assessment: Total Marks 300: End of Year Written Examination 150 marks; Continuous Assessment 150 marks (4 In-class tests 30 marks each; class work 30 marks).

Compulsory Elements: End of Year Written Examination; Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): None.

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40%.

End of Year Written Examination Profile: 1 x 3 hr(s) paper(s).

Requirements for Supplemental Examination: 1 x 3 hr(s) paper(s) to be taken in Autumn. Marks in passed element(s) of Continuous Assessment are carried forward, Failed element(s) of Continuous Assessment must be repeated (Students who have failed or not sat the in-class tests will be required to sit a further 2hr in-class test in August).

GK2003 Reading Greek

Module Objective: To complete the study of Greek morphology and syntax.

Module Content: Reading Greek Sections 12-19

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Classify and identify the principal elements of the morphology of Attic Greek.
· Identify and describe the main constructions in the syntax of Attic Greek.
· Combine the above elements in order to translate sentences from English into Greek.
· Analyse the structure of and translate sentences and continuous passages from Greek into English.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: End of Year Written Examination 100 marks.

Module Objective: To consolidate and develop knowledge of Greek through the reading of the New Testament in Greek.

Module Content: Selected readings from the New Testament.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Consolidate knowledge of the grammatical structures of Ancient Greek.
· .Recognise the morphology of basic Greek verbs.
· .Translate simple Greek texts with the aid of a dictionary.
· Identify the distinctive features of New Testament Greek.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: End of Year Written Examination 100 marks.

Module Objective: Introduction to the reading of Plato's philosophy, with special emphasis on Platonic dialogues about love and knowledge.

Module Content: Reading, translation and discussion of selected texts. Reading of a prescribed text outside class.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Read, understand, and translate Platonic works with the help of a dictionary and commentary.
· Understand and analyse features of style specific to the genre of philosophical writing.
· Describe in general terms Plato's importance in the history of philosophical thought.
· Discuss aspects of Platonic thought in writing (on set topics).

Assessment: Total Marks 100: End of Year Written Examination 80 marks; Continuous Assessment 20 marks (1 x 1,500 word essay).

Compulsory Elements: End of Year Written Examination; Continuous Assessment.

Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 5% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.

Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40% Students must obtain a pass mark in the question set on the text prescribed for reading outside the class.

Module Objective: Introduction to the history, language and context of Greek rhetoric.

Module Content: Reading, translation and discussion of selected speeches by Lysias. Reading of a prescribed text outside class.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
· Read, understand, and translate works of Lysias with the help of a dictionary and commentary.
· Understand and analyse features of Lysias' style.
· Describe in general terms the importance of Lysias for the study of Greek Oratory.

Assessment: Total Marks 100: End of Year Written Examination 80 marks; Continuous Assessment 20 marks (essay).

· Consolidate and expand their knowledge of Greek vocabulary.
· Identify the morphology of basic Greek verbs.
· Translate slightly adapted Greek texts with the aid of a dictionary.

· Define the work of the authors studied within ancient Greek literature.
