UCC MEDICAL WEBSITES

UCC Medical School - The SOM's website

MedSoc - The UCC Medical Society. The society that gets all the interest - the party soc.

SurgSoc - Neglected in '07-'08, this society for the furthering of surgery at UCC is in need of a good home.

Surgeon Noonan Society - Gets nearly as much of the spotlight as MedSoc. This is a well-run charitable society that sends UCC students on 4th year elective to Africa (with bags full of equipent and money).

SurgEnt - The UCC Department of Surgery runs this excellent teaching site that is worth perusing as those that examine surgery had a lot to do with the cases up here...

Blackboard - Your online course materials (requires logon & PIN). Ideally, everything should be put up here but the world ain't perfect so if a lecturer has forgetten to post some notes, ask him or her nicely and you should find happiness.

UCC Booleweb - Booleweb is the online library. From here, there is access to eJournals and access to PDFs of all the summer & autumn past papers for all your subject (requires logon & password). Note: the new curriculum has been up and running since 2005 so there are only a few past papers for each subject. The old curriculum exams are still online and can be accessed as well although there is no guarantee the questions are the same style.

Other societies that may yet have a presence at UCC Medical School (this means one of you out there has to get stuck in...)

AMSA - The American Medical Students Association. TCD, UCD, and RCSI have International Chapter status. If a group of students wants to get involved with the AMSA, it would be an excellent idea to start a chapter here.

The other Irish medical schools' websites (sometimes they try to catch up to us and put something useful online...)

Trinity College Dublin
University College Dublin
NUI Galway
Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland
University of Limerick

UCC RESEARCH CENTRES:

UCC does some serious research and if you are interested in getting involved, take a look.

BSI - The BioSciences Institute.  This is the epicentre.  Most of the basic medical science research goes on here.  Students have found summer jobs here in the past (paid slightly better than the HRB/Wellcome Trust grants).  Peruse the website if you are interested.

APC - The Alimentary Pharmacobiotic Centre. Among other things, the APC investigates the use of probiotics in disease and health. They run various clinical trials and conduct promising research into the use of probiotics in inflammatory bowel disease.

INSURANCE: yes, you're covered!

UCC will cover you for your 4th year elective at no expense to yourself as the elective is a requirement for the degree.

There are other medical indemnity organisations that you should join in first year as they give free membership to students, reduced membership for interns, and free cover should you choose to do another elective somewhere. Reps from each of these organisations will visit the classes in first year at UCC and give you the opportunity to sign up.

MPS - The Medical Protection Society. The MPS indemnifies most doctors in Ireland and the UK. They provide free elective cover for one elective upon application. In addition, the MPS representative visits UCC several times a year to sign final year students up.

MDU - The Medical Defence Union. The MDU covered many doctors in Ireland but after a dispute over retrospective consultant obstetric cover does not sign up new doctors here.
