(c) 2004, 2008 UCC Medical Society.

In the summer between 4th year and Final year, everyone has to do an elective of four weeks. People can choose what specialty to do and where they want to do it. It is a great opportunity to have a little "no strings attached" flirtation with a specialty you may never see in medical school or to pursue a specialty you make want to do as a career.

This page operates on the assumption you already know what specialty you want to do so, if you are still wondering, the postgraduate page may help. The links below will outline the steps needed to secure an elective in the country of your choosing:

In conjunction with the Medical School, elective reviews from all the students who do electives at UCC will soon be available for everyone to get an idea of the place you go to before you dive right in.

INSURANCE

Remember, indemnity is an important part of your paperwork for doing an elective. UCC has two indemnity policies, one as a group policy for all students and staff of the college from AIG, and one from the Irish Government. Copies of the up to date certificates are available from the medical school.

In addition, separate cover is advisable. The Medical Protection Society provides free elective cover upon application.
