The Maths Intervarsities

Overview of the Competition

The Intervarsities (or the Irish Intervarsity Mathematical Competition to give it its proper title) is a national competition open to all the universities in Ireland. First initiated and hosted by UCC in 1990, each institution at this event can be represented by up to two teams of four students each (undergraduate or postgraduate). All these students must then individually sit a three hour mathematics exam set out by that years host university. The team with the highest overall score then wins the competition and brings the title of 'Best Irish Maths University' back with them. Furthermore the student who obtains the highest mark can call themselves the 'Best Irish Maths Student'.

Team Selection

The students selected to represent University College Cork in the IV's each year are done so based solely on their results from the Superbrain competition. In essence the team is made up of the top four students that are eligible to compete in the IV's. In recent years, we have been sending two teams to the IV's. The members of the second team are also based on the Superbrain results.
