The IMSA Conference
Firstly, what is IMSA?
Generally each university has their own mathematical society at which students can interact and meet. However, no such national society existed where maths students of different universities could meet socially. This is why the Irish Maths Students Association or IMSA was created. Although no official body actually exists for IMSA, a different maths society each year takes responsibility for organising the single IMSA event, the conference.
And the Conference?
The IMSA Conference brings maths students from all over Ireland together over one weekend. In any given year the location will vary depending on which maths society is hosting the event. Additionally, the actual schedule for the weekend is also left up to the society. Generally, there would be five or six guest lecturers invited to the conference to give talks or presentations. Although some of these lecturers might be from the host institution, some would usually be from other universities both national and international. Additionally in previous years, students attending the conference have also given short fifteen minute presentations. These have played the part both as space fillers and a student competition akin to the Boole Prize. Apart from that (and for some people the best parts) the weekend usually involves some sort of table quiz, free food, free drink, a fancy dinner, free drink and lots of socialising.
