About Our Club
The UCC Karate club was formed in 1976 by John McCormack and has been trained,
developed and overseen since 1980 by Sensei Trevor Williams, Sensei Nigel Williams and Sensei Susan Dwane.
Instructor Sensei Susan Dwane
Our club trains in Shotokan Karate with emphasis on traditional style and training methods.
The club trains twice a week as outlined in training times.
For the most part of the year two classes are held. One for absolute beginners or those returning to Karate who wish to gain some grounding
in basic techniques and another separate class for advanced grades. The two classes are entirely separate to allow beginners an opportunity
to fully benefit from a solid period of introductory training. There is no fee for training. Trainers Philip Dorgan, Sensei Susan Dwane, Latif Takak If you wish to begin
training please read the training page and the dojo etiquette. The website is intended to provide information concerning club business to all members
and provide some information regarding Karate training applicable to all levels. However, you should bear in mind that Karate is a physical
discipline and therefore involves actual instruction to master the techniques. It is with this in mind that information is provided on the
site to supplement physical training. If any practicing member of the club would like to see further information posted as supplementary material
please request this through the club committee and every effort will be made to fulfill the request.
Committee: Vicki O'Connor (Treasurer - 2005), Latif Takak (assistant instructor), Colm Mc Caffrey (Vice Captain),
Claire Barrett (Club Captain) The UCC Karate club aim to make training a positive and rewarding experience for every member.
Strong emphasis is placed in all training on building strong fundamental techniques and the notion of individual potential.
The club brings instructors of international standard to train in the university several times during the year and we compete in every intervarsity
competition (Only those members training regularly with the club will be allowed to compete at the intervarsities). Collective /
team spirit is actively encouraged and many club nights out are organised during the year. Karate as a discipline has no restrictions on
those who endeavor to master it. There are no restrictions on age (we literally have had people in the club from 16 to 60!) or physical ability.
Anyone who is willing to train can and is welcome. For practical as well as traditional reasons all that is asked of members is that the dojo etiquette is strictly observed and that both instructors and students are treated with
the level of respect that this etiquette demands.
