The Honan Chapel: a gem of the Celtic Revival Movement

For liturgy and prayer, for celebration of key moments in the academic year the

Chaplaincy at UCC is fortunate to have special ‘sacred space’ that is the Honan Chapel.

The Honan Chapel, named for the Cork merchant family who funded it, was formally

consecrated in November 1916, and ever since has been the gathering point on UCC

campus for prayer and Liturgy, for weekday and Sunday Eucharist and for ecumenical

celebrations such as at Graduation.

The chapel was built during the high point of the Irish Arts & Crafts Movement.

It is known for its colourful mosaic floor, the tabernacle with enamals by Oswald Reeves

and especially the windows of Harry Clarke and Sarah Purser's studio.

Changes in the liturgy, brought about by Vatican II, gave opportunities for a new

generation of artists to decorate the Honan. Imogen Stuart designed the altar, ambo,

priest's chair and baptismal font. Hangings were designed by Evelyn Ross and Kim En

Joong. The pipe organ was built by Kenneth Jones.

In recent years the Honan Chapel has undergone conservation work by Richard Hurley

& Associates, a Dublin based architectural firm. They won awards for their conservation

work on the chapel in 1987 and 1992. The nineteen stained glass windows have recently

been cleaned and conserved by the Dublin Glass Company. Such work is necessary to

preserve this unique and historically important testament to Irish Arts & Crafts in general

and to the Cork movement in particular.

The Honan Chapel is open to visitors Monday to Friday, from 8am-8pm and
Saturdays 10am-6pm. Open Sunday during term times for Liturgy at 12 noon only.
Visits can be made to the chapel during these hours with the exception of Mass times and weddings.
Daily Mass Term Time: 1.05pm
Weddings are frequently celebrated between the hours of 12 noon and 6pm, especially
Thursday-Saturday during the Summer months.
Further information on the Honan Chapel is available from the Iona Chaplaincy.
