UCC expertise helps commemorate battle
Dr Hiram Morgan, History, and Louise Tobin, International Education Officer, UCC are involved in the year-long commemorations for The Battle of Kinsale.

The causes, contexts and consequences of the Battle of Kinsale have been chosen as the theme of UCC's Arts Faculty "Turning Points in History" Summer School which will run from 1 - 27 July 2001.

UCC academics have also been invited to participate in The Kinsale 1601 Winter School that takes place on 3-6 January 2002. The School will feature visiting academics, politicians and other public figures and aims to attract an audience of local and national historians as well as participants from Britain, Spain amongst other EU member states.

A number of scholarly projects will give the Kinsale commemoration a lasting impact."There is a need to make neglected texts more widely available to expand the study of the period beyond the current obsession with the planter-poet, Edmund Spenser", says Dr Morgan. He and Kenneth Nicholls, History, are preparing for publication an important source for the war in the Midlands, The Dialogue of Peregyrnne and Sylvynne by HC. Much of the work is inter-disciplinary. Dr Morgan is advising the Department of Ancient Classics who are preparing full translations of Catholic histories of the war: Philip O'Sullivan's Compendium (Lisbon, 1621) and Peter Lombard's Commentarius (Louvain, 1632). They are currently seeking donors to see the speedy completion of this work. The Department of Irish is running a high-powered seminar on O'Clery's contemporary biography of Red Hugh, Beatha Aodha Ruaidh Uí Dhomhnaill.

Dr Morgan is acting as historical advisor on an RTÉ Cork documentary, which will be broadcast on 22 September to coincide with the anniversary of the Spanish landing. The same day will see a big celebration in Kinsale itself with the President of Ireland greeting a flotilla of ships in Kinsale Harbour.
