Seán Keating Exhibition

An exhibition and conference on the work of artist Seán Keating,
RHA(1889-1977) entitled the Art of State Building, has recently
taken place in UCC. The Department of Electrical Engineering
hosted both the conference and the exhibition, which was opened
by Michael Keating, the engineer son of Seán.

Seán Keating is one of the most important figures in 20th
century Irish art and the exhibition mainly focused on paintings
and drawings commissioned by the ESB in 1926 illustrating
the development of the hydroelectric scheme at Ardnacrusha.
Also on view were Men of the South on loan from the Crawford
Municipal Gallery of Art and The Key Men on loan from the
Institution of Engineers of Ireland.
Speakers at the one-day conference included Dr Andy Bielenberg,
History, William Gallagher, Art Historian, Ardnacrusha plant
manager Bob Cullen and forensic engineer Paul Duffy.
Professor Robert Yacamini, Dean of Engineering, initiated
and organised the event withteh help of Andy Bielenberg and
Fiona Kearney, Visual Arts.

Conference Pilgrimage 2000
One of the largest
interdepartmental conferences to be held in UCC will take place
this year between 26-29 July. The theme Pilgrimage represents
the connotations of the transition into the new millennium and
also reflects the research insterests of a number of staff at
UCC, one of the main centres of medieval studies in Ireland.
Approximately 80 speakers, many from UCC, will explore topics
such as, Pilgrim Routes and Sites, Literature, Geography, Spirituality,
Artefacts and Archaeology, Music, Relics and Saints.

This international conference connects with the 21st International
Summer School in Irish Studies, UCC, which examines how the
Irish expressed a sense of their identity through their literature
from the earliest times.
Pilgrimage 2000 is organised by Dr Dagmar O'Riain-Raedel,
History, who is co-ordinating contributions from many UCC
departments. The Conference funding is provided by, amongst
others, the Governors of the Honan Trust. Further information
