STAFF PRESENTATIONS

Dr Eleanor O’Leary, Director, Counselling & Health Studies Unit, Applied Psychology, convened and chaired the Psychological Society of Ireland 30th conference held in Cork. Dr O’Leary and Ms Nicola Barry, Applied Psychology, presented the paper Gestalt Reminiscence Therapy; Dr O’Leary and Ms Inge Nieuwstraten, Counselling & Health Studies Unit, Applied Psychology, presented papers entitled Emerging Memories in the Context of Group Therapy and The Manifestations of Apparent Blocks to Growth: Are they really blocks? Dr O’Leary presented the paper Research in Counselling Psychology in the Republic of Ireland and Dr O’Leary, Ms Máiréid Crowley, Counselling & Health Studies Unit, and Ms Kathleen O’Sullivan, Statistical Laboratory, presented the paper An Exploration of Retirement Anxiety and Depression in a Sample of Irish Secondary Level Teachers.

Dr William Reville, Biochemistry, addressed the University Women’s Association with a talk entitled What is Science? He was also invited to deliver one in a series of lectures organised by Trinity College Dublin Chaplain’s Office on Science and Christianity.

Dr Manfred Schewe, German, was invited to give a series of demonstration lectures and workshops on Drama as a Method in the Learning and Teaching of Language, Literature and Culture at a number of institutions: Goethe Institute, Boston; Goethe Institute, Chicago; University of Missouri/St Louis; Goethe Institutes in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa; Goethe Institute, Trieste and University of Bologna, Italy.

Dr Paul McSweeney, Food Science and Technology, has been guest lecturer at Dalum Technical College, Odense, Denmark and covered lectures on cheese ripening. He has attended a course on Cheese Science and presented a paper at a conference at the Universidad Nacional del Littoral, Santa Fe, Argentina. He has also been invited to be the keynote speaker at an International Dairy Federation conference in Banff, Canada, his talk entitled Proteolysis in cheese during ripening: recent developments.

Dr McSweeney, Professor Patrick Fox, Food Science and Technology, and two colleagues from Moorepark have collaborated on a recently published book entitled Fundamentals of Cheese Science, Aspen Publishers, Gaithersburg, MD, USA.

Dr Kevin Hourihan, Geography, for twelve months to carry out research in urban studies in Eastern Europe, Italy and New York.

Professor Joe Lee, History, for twelve months to take up the Glucksman Chair of Irish Studies at NYU.

Dr JoAnne Mancini, History, for four months to complete her research fellowship at the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington

Dr Michel Martiny, French, for three months to undertake research at the University of Montreal, Laval University in Quebec and the College Universitaire Saint-Boniface in Winnipeg.

Mr John Meagher, Accounting, Finance & IS, for nine months to carry out research in the area of motivations, pressures and conflicts at the Budapest University of Economic Sciences.
