IMPACT is a multidisciplinary project and involves seventeen academic centres of excellence in eight EU member states. The project also incorporates an industrial platform. The expertise of the different centres involved in IMPACT covers microbial ecology, molecular genetics, crop protection and agronomy and allows a comprehensive approach, from the gene to the field. The experiments concerning the release of microbial inoculants are carried out at different scales, from laboratory and greenhouse experiments to field trials. In several European countries, the experiments implemented within IMPACT represent the first application of the new European laws and regulations concerning the release of genetically-modified microorganisms and offer a unique opportunity for the competent authorities to evaluate the current regulatory framework. IMPACT is coordinated by Professor Fergal O'Gara, Microbiology Department, University College Cork, Cork (Ireland).
